Just found out that I will be spending some time in the Bemidji, MN area. I've never been there and was wondering if anyone knows of potential rockhounding areas close by, any rock shops to visit, etc?

Thats the northern end of Minnesota and hence glacial country. If its similar to the area to the east the following may help. Many times you will find the sides of roads, drainage ditches, many fields etc have stones pulled out the fields by farmers or construction machinery. On the right of way of the road or outside the fences you should have free picking. Ditto some of the county gravel pits are fair game as long as no heavy machinery is running to endanger you. If doubtful, its best to ask permission. Most of it is granite, but you never know what you are going to find. Enjoy - the spectrum is rocks from greater Canada brought to MN for your convenience and polished on the way. Tom

The Red River should have prairie agates on the gravel beds...It runs the borderline of ND and Minn.

That is on the wrong end of the state to get lakers. The prairies may be there, but I don't know because I despise that area and do not go there willingly.

Where are you coming from? Driving? Flying? A bit of a drive but Silver Bay, MN and Two Harbors, MN have the two best agate shops in the Northland. Best agate hunting areas are back roads, trails, old rr. grades, etc. Sept. 20 is one of the best agate shows in the area, Two Harbors. Already missed the Moose Lake show which is the premier agate show. Good luck, have fun.

Probably will have some time to hit the back roads and associated ditches, and lake shores while fishing.

If you are driving from Minneapolis stop at Rock and Things in Princeton. It is on the way. I like it because he carries a lot of rough, and it is 6 miles away..............MrP

If you are driving through MPS, you will probably drive through my town. When are you going through? I might be able to point you in some good directions if the timing is right.

I was in there about 1:30 - 2:00 myself. Always walk out poorer. He does have a nice selection of materials in there. I have been going there for years and at one time I didn't think it would make it because his business was not growing. He stuck with it and it is a nice place to go. Every once in a while I wish it was a better shop, then I am some place and go into the shop in that area and realize how great I really have it. About 2 years ago the rock shop in Prescott, WI closed. What a loss. That shop was 75 miles away, but was open on Sundays so a nice trip on nice days.
Rock shops seem to be few and far between. It take a very dedicated person to get a shop up and keep it running. Which reminds me, we have some very good suppliers on this board that I hope stay around. I will use them if they have what I am looking for. Of course we have had the other kind on here but they disappear in short order
Sorry to get off topic.
Hope your trip is a great one!.....MrP
