Hello all!
I am planning a gift for my mother in law that involves alternative birthstones of her, my father in law, my husband, and my sister in law. I was hoping to hound as much as possible. Bloodstone is already bought, can't find that here.
The other three are carnellian (I know I can get this fairly close), opal, and turquoise.
I live just outside of El Paso, TX on the New Mexico border near Las Cruces. I know turquoise might be tricky, and I can get fire opal out in AZ, but that is a hefty drive. Any other suggestions on places that aren't listed in Rockhounding, NM? I know I can buy the stuff, but it is more meaningful to hound it.

Sure one can buy these stones and I'm not familiar with the western areas when searching for these stones, yet here on the east coast, Mainly near Carlisle PA.. there is what's known as "Chalk Turquoise" and I've yet to head up that way.. To bad you don't live more in the souther United States again mainly in North Carolina or Tennessee.
But if your not looking to actually hound these items off the land.. I'm sure there are those within the community that might have a thing or two to share with you. I can't help you with the Turquoises or Opal.. or at least the wife isn't willing to part with any stones.. I can see what I have in the Carnelian Aspect. Would a Slab cut Carnelian suit your purpose? or would you need a small chunk?

I think what you will find in AZ is Fire Agate, not fire opal. Maybe I am wrong. Turquoise will be hounded on the same trip. But any sites for turquoise or precious opal will have commercial value and will therefore be a closely guarded secret. Good luck in your quest!!! Pics of success welcome!
