I should say that this is only the third summer we've looked for agates and the first time we've spent three days. In the past, it's been a few hours once a summer. This area is very popular for agate hunting and there's only so much beach, so they get picked pretty heavily. I hear that it's better in the spring as soon as the ice goes out and in the fall when there are more violent storms. Since I'm four hours away, it's hard to get there right after a storm or as soon as the ice melts.

nice haul. That last one seems to have a face... at least a mouth and one eye and a ridge for the nose. What is the blue-ish iridescent looking stuff on it? very interesting!

I think the blueish iridescent stuff is water, or the reflection of something in the water. It's not actually blue.

I'm envious of your haul. I love Lakers. Last August I made a trip to the west shore of Lake Superior after visiting my niece in Chicago (I live in San Jose, Calif). I spent 4 days hounding the shoreline and river gravel bars. I found 2 Lakers. I checked in with a well known rock shop in the area, told them what I was doing and my plan, and asked if it made sense. I was told that my plan was solid. But like you, they told me for searching the shoreline one needs to get there in early spring because soon after the shorelines are picked clean. And my plan for searching river gravel bars was spot on, except for the timing. One should get there shortly after the rivers start receding. Otherwise, as I had found out, the gravel is covered in a mud coating. But the area was beautiful and the hiking I got in was fabulous. So it wasn't a total bummer. There is a really cool forum that you might find interesting. It's an outdoor activity website with a forum for Lakers. Most of the posts are from Minnesotans. But there are some from other states. It is photo heavy. And what cracked me up is that many of the posters are fishermen that have discovered the fun in collecting Lakers. And there is some good information to be found there. It's at www.hotspotoutdoors.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2642796/Lake_Superior_Agates

Thanks for the site, Patrick. I really enjoy watching this guy's videos. He has an agate picker's dream spot to hunt. What he calls "small" would make my day.

I wonder if that's the guy from the site I mentioned who is always in this one gravel pit that he has permission to dig in. He just rakes 'em in. Makes it look so easy. While I was there I used topo maps to find gravel pits. I only found three in the area I was in that seemed to be inactive and no longer on private property. But they must have been inactive for a long time and picked over as I didn't find anything. Watching that video makes me want to try again.

Great haul. Count me in on the jealous side. I know you'll do them justice and anxiously await seeing them finished.

That's a fine mess of agates, and it would appear that Brian has a pretty good eye. Sounds kind of like here-the best picking is after snowmelt in the spring and again in late summer after a heavy thunderstorm. Thanks for sharing.

Don't wait for them to be tumbled. Bryan has decided he wants to keep his Lakers natural, especially since most are so small. I agree. We might eventually display them in a tall glass continer with water and a lid.
