Are there really any toxic lapidary materials???
Toxic is defined as
toxic [tok-sik] adjective
So, that isn't very helpful. So I then checked "poisonous"
poisonous [poi-zuh-nuh s] adjective
and so what is a poison.
poison [poi-zuh n] noun
So then we can think of a toxic material as one that will destroy life or impair health. That last little bit MAY put us into a reality in which a lapidary material MAY impair health.
So, then, based on previous discussion we can surmise copper ores CAN impair health. We'd have to eat a bit of it, but it is possible. I'll accept that Myrickite (a mercury ore with lapidary properties) could also impair health with enough exposure.
We might all even agree that asbesto-form minerals may impair health with the correct type of exposure.
So here is our list - which I will add too as more materials get added. In no way is this meant to dissuade folks from working with these materials. The hazards are so easily avoided as to be laughable. But we do need a list of stuff which need simple precautions. If anyone has any other's they would like to see here, post it into this thread. I'd appreciate it if you would also provide some links to the health hazards of that material.
Here is the list:
[li]Myrickite-Cinnabar[/li]
[li]Asbestos related[/li]
[li]Bumblee 'Jasper'[/li]
[li]Nickel stuff[/li]
[li]Cobalt stuff[/li]
[/ul]
The precautions are:
Cut wet, wear gloves, wear dust mask to keep mist laden with stone dust from entering your body.
Many thanks to contributors.
