Cool batch, Chuck. That Laker with the holes in it is really unusual. Do you know what type it is? Is it a sagenite? The first laker is my favorite.

I am no expert on lakers I just tumble what ever I can get a hold of. These were the ones I got at that estate sale in this spring Here's the group shot before tumbling. average weight was 1/4 pound each. I am sure I took away most of the value by tumbling them but they sure look nice to me. Chuck

Oh, I remember those now. The one with the holes is the one on the bottom of the rough picture. When you first posted those, I was wondering if that was a piece of Thomsonite or prehnite. It doesn't look like a normal Laker.

Those are sure beauties Chuck. Nice polish on them. I have heard they take longer than most any other agate as they are max hardness. True? I am sure I took away most of the value by tumbling them but they sure look nice to me. Chuck Yeah, I never understood that. Sure, smooth natural ones that already have a good polish are nice, but I have seen many lakers and Fairburns that I think would be much better with a polish.

They are about as hard as it gets but I think Montana, bahia and botswana agates are all right on par with the hardness of these. The coral I have gotten from James is as hard as nails too, I have wondered how that stuff rates on the MOHS scale. Chuck

Very pretty batch. Newbie question alert!!! When you say laker what is that really? Thanks! Lake Superior agates. Some are found on the Lake Superior shores of Michigan but the majority of whats on the market come from Minnesota. Good newbie question. As far as value goes a decent one pound laker sells for about $250 and a high grade laker would go for as much as $400 for a one pound rock. grinding and tumbling almost always decreases the value. Chuck

That shine is absolutely ridiculous!! Those are some fantastic looking lakers!! Thanks There's no trick to getting lakers to shine. These really had a mirror finish when they came out of pre-polish. I honestly did not see any change after the final polish stage. Chuck

Rob What do you think of this for comparison "This Lake Superior Agate exhibits multiple small radial sprays of sagenite needles and fine tube structures in the central area." and here is mine Chuck

I'd say that's a very good match.

I'd say that's a very good match. I normally would not have guessed that it was a Laker either but it was in the same bag as the others when I got them. Chuck

Lakers are one of my very favorites. You have some really nice and as usual very shiny ones there. They all look great! I have 10 pounds waiting their turn for a go in the tumblers. The larger ones need help. Gotta get a grinder ......
