I just finished slabbing and polishing this slab of Glass Buttes Mahogany Obsidian. As you can see there are some very transparent areas amidst the beautiful red patterns. It is 4" high by 3" wide. Bob

That is just amazing! I have this little personal dream project consisting of taking an old tube based amplifier and rebuilding it in a custom enclosure. I was thinking of "screening" the tubes with a translucent slab. That would fit the bill nicely, is this normal for that type of obsidian? Just gorgeous

It is rather unusual to find this material with so much clear area as this piece has. Mostly the clear areas are narrow wavy bands surrounded by black and red. Bob

This particular slab is 3/16" thick. Thick enough for me to make a fairly large cab. I have sister slabs from the piece that I might cab. Bob

I sense a ROAD TRIP to the Buttes!!! Not like I can ever make something that amazing, but I can stock up on the rough and dream.

Looking at what you found there, I will have to up a visit to the Glass Buttes a few notches on the proverbial bucket list. What makes it this far east with the vendors never has windows like that. Truly volcanic glass.

Wow, that is pretty fantastic. I've only ever seen pieces like deserthound posted. Love the large transparent areas.
