While camping in Maine this summer, Laura and I stumbled upon a little gem that is more popular with the locals than the tourists. I guess that means we crashed the party. Bethel offers an amazing water slide where tourists can spend their hard earned dollars sliding down plastic slides and tubes while staying wet and cool on a hot summer day. Step Falls offers a similar adventure, but only costs a modest donation to keep the trails and signage up. Step Falls is near Newry, Maine and is maintained by the Mahoosuc Land Trust. It is truly Mother Nature’s waterslide. The granite hills have been highly glaciated carving smooth cut channels and polishing the rock. You can climb to the top and slide over ledges into a series of plunge pools, or simply stop and enjoy the view along the way. Newry is close to the New Hampshire border and the hills can be seen off in the distance from the top of Step Falls. Enjoy the pics. Darryl.

Looks like granite down our way. Slides common here too. Pretty country.

kk:
From Route 26 in Newry, Maine, proceed north on Bear River Road. The Mahoosuc Land Trust (Step Falls) is just south of Grafton Notch State Park, which will appear in a future post.
Darryl.
