My wife found these slabs on ebay and they arrived today. The first one is not like anything I've seen before. They are all about 2 1/2 " in length.

The seller used a made up name for the material. Closest I can come is pet wood. The item was the four slabs.

The slabs are quite hard like a porcelain jasper. I won't know for sure until I work one. Feels about as hard as palm.

It was listed as Top Fruit Petrified Wood slices. Any searches on Google and ebay using that name were "fruitless".

Looked in my big book o petrified wood ( not it's real name *L*) and the top left one looks very much like oak or some closely related hardwood. Not sure about the other three. Those would take a lot more research an it's a honkin big book with tons of pics but "not" palm for sure.....Mel

My wife bought a selection of pet wood years ago. Oak is a good guess. This oak cab took a great polish, but I photographed to show the pattern. Not as distinct as the piece I got.

Looked through my book and many types seem so similar it makes me dizzy. I'd say from the book pics, that the other slabs are "diffuse porous" hardwoods. Big group with lots of variants including black cherry, sycamore, maple, sweetgum, alder, beech, birch etc. I sure wish I was more expert at woods as I love pet wood. Fascinating subject.....Mel

Now I'm not sure. I have these but they haven't been cut and I can't find oak in my pet wood box and I had some.

It might be stinking water oak.

Live Oak is a diffuse porous wood too. The fir would be a soft wood conifer. Maybe one of our wood experts will chime in as I'm curious too....Mel
