Hi all, After searching in the river, creek beds, meadows and in my neighborhood and finding only quartzite and granite, I figuered I would have to order "good" rocks from somwhere eles and eat the shipping. I was running errands today and drove past a rock shop I've been driving past on the way to work for years. I never paid much attention to it because its just a shack really and outside there was only slag glass diplayed that I could see. Decided today to take a closer look. Wow. This guys got everything and he dosen't even know what most of it is. Jasper, agate, picture agate, mook, moss and tree agate. There was a huge chunk of georgeous mook bigger than your head that I asked him about, he said "I don't know what it's called or exactly how much it wieghs but if you want it I'll let yopu have it for $2.00 a pound. Your'e a local huh? Don't pay attention to the prices on the stickers, I'll work with you." It probably weighs 40-50 #. I think I died and went to heaven and nobody told me. I'll have to wait till pay day but I'm going to see my new best friend then ;D cookie

I'd love to find a place like that around here. I've heard there are a couiple rock shops up in Seattle, but as near as I can tell, nothing in Olympia or Tacoma.
Anybody know anything about Western Washington?

Greetings All,
The nearest rock shops to me are in Little Rock, AK, about 4 hours away. One of these days I'm going to take a weekend trip back over there and bring some of my South African rocks to see if any of them are interested in trading. Can't hurt to try.

Once I actually go and see what kind of prices I can get i"ll let you guys know and if you are looking for somthing I can get a good deal on, maybe we can do a deal for shipping + my price. Only thing is right now I don't really know what constitutes a good deal, I've never purchased them before. Anybody know of a general price list I can go by? cookie Did I mention this place is 3 miles from my home and 1/2 a block from my job? OK, now I'm just rubbin it in.

Hey Cookie I remember you are from GA. Have you been to Ballgound GA? "The Rock Man" has buildings full of all sorts of rock. This guy used to just sit in his truck and watch for people to act intrested. Never know when he will be there though. If you wouldn't mind revealing your "best friend" info I'd like to check him out.

Hi Waywardcat, As soon as I go over there again I'll get some info and let you know. You might want to remind me in about a week. I was just thinking about something ironic. I manage a shoe store for a living and I'm not a shoe hound (luckily) like a lot of my customers. They get thier check and buy shoes, I'll get mine and run to the rock shop. This could be dangerous. (Only been in GA 5 years, and I haven't been around the state much.)

Hey, Cookie, very cool about the rock. I don't know about larger ones, but I'm sure you can find plenty of smaller ones on Ebay. You can find anything on Ebay. Someone actually tried to sell one of the states on Ebay (as a joke because that state is so far in debt) but I don't remember which one.
Now, THAT would be a hellava rock!
BTW, what is mook? I'm new to this hobby and I'm 'toopid when it comes to rocks.

OK Taralina, I have to admit I don't know the technical name, I had to ask Sandman and now I've forgotten. But I remember what it looks like and it can be pricey by the pound. The wonderful thing about my new find is No Shipping Costs! shipping can sometimes be more than the rock it'self. Lets face it, it's rock, it's heavy. And I'd like to put in a bid for Arizona, but the shipping cost, even by parcel post, you know. ;D...

While visiting some friends in Western North Carolina, I asked my friends to stop at any rock shops while we were touring around the area.
We only found one little rock shop. It was closed on Sunday morning. We agreed to stop on the way back. Sure enough, the owner was at church in the morning. It wasn't a large shop, but I found some nice slabs and a piece of flourite and pyrite that the owner mined in his younger days.
I think the total would have come to $30, but he marked the stuff down to $20!
Seems that the smaller hole in the wall places will negotiate prices.
