I was reading another thread where Sabre52 mentioned macrame bands with stones for hats. Being an Easterner, I'm not real familiar with hats. Do hat bands serve a function- like a belt for your head? I ask because my husband finally found a hat that he loves, called a tarp bush hat. He wants to make a paracord band and thinks it will help because it is a hair too big. Yeah, he still has enough hair left, but not enough to fill in the gap. LOL! He's between sizes. Anyway, like most of his projects, it probably won't get finished, so I thought I would do it for him and surprise him. But, I have never seen a hatband in person. Can y'all chime in and point me to some links with good info. Or, is it just something that goes around for decoration and ties in the back? Do I sound dumb or what?

*LOL* Nah, hayat bands is just to purdy up yore topper so's to maybe match up wit yore purdy boots. I suppose one practical purpose might be to cover up the sweayat ring where yore noggin sweayat bleeds up into the felt or straw of yore hayat but mainly, that don't hardly never work causin us westerners sweayat a lot.....Mel
PS: Them tarp bush hayats are really hot even though them that sells them says they is not. Remind me of the "Brush Popper" shirts them Levis guys sold some of us pokes under false pretenses. Gulldanged thangs was so hot anyone stupid enough to wear one could cook eggs in his armpits.
PPS: I should add that most hatbands have a stampede cord/strap associated with the band. that part is functional as it keep yore hayat from blowing off yore haid and spooking the horse behind you which tends to cause real hard feelings.

Tell yer hubby to just wear that hat for a few days...sweat in it!.. and then put it up to dry a few days.. After doing this for a couple of times it will fit ok.. A hatband is usually for decoration. Although an adjustable one will probably cinch a very slightly big one up a notch. A leather sweatband will shrink up and usually stay better then a cloth band. But hopefully that hat doesn't have a canvas sweatband.. o.O

Hey Tela I wear cowboy hats, world's greatest one legged cowboy you know! A nice hat band idea is to put a elongated bead on a leather thong. I made beads with copper pipe and glass powder in Quartzite last year. They r purty. I think you could drill a jasper and then polish the outside to make your bead. I say jasper because of the picture jsspers. Get him a feather to put under the band too.
