Thanks for showing them in matrix. Always wondered about that. I have a small double terminated Herkimer. Hard to imagine how it forms.

I tried to get the best pics I could with my phone. Some have so many angles that the light washed them out. They look way better in person. The rock around the crystals is really soft too. The pic where I have them stacked I cut and trimmed the top rock (and crystal oops). Very fun and rewarding experience there.
They also have a HUGE rock shop. All sorts of rough ranging from $2/lb to $15/lb. It's all mixed up and high school kids run the place. The rough looks like some hasn't been touched in years (due to dust and cobwebs on them). No matter what their website says, in person they make it perfectly clear that they aren't interested in buying back diamonds. But they do have some for sale with a nice price tag on them (not cheap). I'll see if I can find some of the pics I took of some huge rocks they were selling. I was a little disappointed when I asked the older man about certain agates and Jasper's and he looked at me like I was crazy for asking because he didn't know what they were. They also appraise your jewels by eye and no loupe or scale. Surface hunting is fine for smaller pieces but it's a must to bring big tools for the big Herkimers.
I'm also afraid to cut the bigger rocks open. Any crack or credits I can see faceted diamonds, Druzy, and smaller crystals. I know they run within the rock and don't want to risk cutting something bigger in half. I guess without risk there's not much reward. I used a chisel at the mine to get some diamonds out and they went flying into the sun and gravel to never be seen again by me.

If you used a chisel at home , the diamonds would be contained. Maybe throw a plain dark blanket over some things where a diamond could land and hide. Sometimes, I think they hide deliberately!

Ha Ha. But what would I do with them outside of its matrix? I havent gotten to the point outside of cabs and making plugs. Plugs: Not mine but like this--plus I love moss agate

Really makes me want to get up to ny... maybe next year when the kids are old enough to go with. Beautiful finds!
