Howdy folks, As all y'all know, I love critters of all types and we have a ton of bird feeders in the yard. Always tickles me how all these feeder manufacturers seem to think they can actually outsmart squirrels. This is kind of a lousy pic as it had to be snapped through a window but it shows just how acrobatic some of our local fox squirrels are. This little lady hangs this way for fifteen minutes at a time while she picks all the good seed from the tray. I think she has a little bat in her genetic makeup as she sure don't mind being inverted.....Mel

Yup, they are some clever! We have a similar problem with 15 to 18 pound racoons. When the going gets tough, black oil sunflower seed will do.
If you keep at it long enough, you will eventually out wit those critters. Problem is it takes a while.
Darryl.

Amazing how smart those critters are! It will take a genius to come up with a truly squirrel-proof feeder, and then one of them will find a way to confound it.
But obviously, Mel, you don't mind sharing the bird's food as payment for the show. They are just another part of the ecosystem. Squirrels are only an issue when/where bubonic plague can be a problem. There are outbreaks every now and then up in our mountains.

Yeah, we really don't mind the squirrels and enjoy the show. Not crazy about our black Mexican Ground Squirrels though. Buggers are humongous and recently dug under my wellhouse foundation and trashed the place. Fortunately the house is all stone and Hardy so no problems with either squirrel species inside the attic. We love the raccoons, especially the little orphan baby who has adopted us.....Mel

Every critter has to eat. I wouldn't mind sharing our fruit with them, but they don't share with us.
We got an electronic noise maker. You can set it for various animals. Ours is set for squirrels. Keeps them at bay. We can't hear the noise nor can cats, dogs, or birds, but the squirrels don't like it. It is the only thing that has worked for us.

I always liked squirrels. Fried up they make a good meal. Trouble is, these little pine squirrels we have up here aren't really big enough to bother with.
Caught one when I was a kid, thought I'd keep it for a pet until it bit me.
Couple of years later I caught a muskrat. Thought that was really cool until he bit through my finger. Slow learner, I guess.
Cool post, Mel. Squirrels defeating bird feeders are a hoot to watch.

Ha, great pic Mel! Where there's a will there's a way. We had gray squirrels around the place when I lived up near Flagstaff as a kid. We also had a big orange tom cat that would bring us back a dead 'un every now and then You have to give this guy a "D" for determination. Bet he doesn't try it twice! More like "D" for dizzy lol.. whatta ride!
