I'm getting ready to slab the jade that Stoner sent me. Here's my question...Do I slab the jade (which is about 6 inches long and 4 inches wide) going the long ways, or across the width ways?
Thanks folks.

;D ;D ;D a "Condor" answer to a question !! ;D ;D ---- it depends on which way you set it in the saw vise !! ( after 15 pages I couldn't resist! ) ;D I tried to find your pic of that piece but didn't ---- guess I would prob go with the grain of it the long way --- but don't know which way the piece is cut to start with --- that way if you cut oval shaped cabs the grain could go length ways and round off the edges --- instead of having alot of grain standing straight up on the dome -- -- but I've had the wrong answer before a few times too!! ;D

Gil, post some photos and I will be able to help you better. Your right, sometimes it helps to cut it a certain way.

I prefer to cut my jade across the grain but mine is in rough hunks not water worn boulders. With my rough, cutting across the grain seems to minimize fractures but all mine is Wyoming or Porterville material, not the Jade Cove stuff...Mel

Thanks from me too for posting that great information Tony. I never thought cutting with the grain would be a good idea but I've seen your posted slabs so know how well yours come out. Maybe that will give me a better yield with my raw material too. Here's a couple of high quality Porterville Jade nodules from the Janoco Mine. I usually cut them across the long axis Would you recommend along the long axis instead?...mel

Mel I am not really sure about that as I haven't worked with that type before. But I have cut similar stuff and found that if you cut with the grain you won't get fractures in the middle. If you are cutting cabs It could be annoying when one breaks in half while cabbing or polishing. I am no expert but this is how I would cut yours. (my hand was shaky due to coffee LOL!) Heres your pic, if you cut post them, maybe we can all learn!

there are prob hundreds --- everything from a mint green to solid black with lots of colors inbetween if you're looking for something different let me know tony -- I'd agree with you on the cutting on both of them ( only maybe straighter lines ;D--maybe less coffee! ;D )

rockinmom: Snowdog is so right! Two major types of jade are nephrite and jadeite but the colors and patterns are almost limitless. I have pink, pink and green ( actually nephrite plus zoisite) blue, black, purple and every shade of green. Plus, pattern wise I have chromoflec, snowflake, flower garden, jade with brown flowers, moss jade, dendritic jade, cats eye jade and zebra jade to name just a few. I've also seen rainbow, mutton fat, almost red, jade with magnetite etc. real a cool type of stone!......mel

Well any hope of containing an inventory in my workshop just went out the window. I have a couple slabs and was thinking it would be nice to have a broader inventory. I had no idea it was so expansive .
