Thanks for the beautiful pictures. Yep, those first couple look like a Russell picture.
That poison ivy would worry me more than the ghost bear, LOL.
Thanks for sharing!

So beautiful. We are lied to in Canada about how America looks. I took a road trip through Washington/Oregon/Cali/Arizona/Neavada/corner of Utah last year and was absolutely blown away. I can't wait to visit the States more, and Montana is high on my list now. The scenery is beautiful, people are nice, and everything's so cheap!

Yeah, the photo with the bear was just too good not to provide what I saw as the missing element. I chose a bear that has just stood up and is trying to access what he is dealing with. This is a most likely pose one second after contact, now either the bear will break off and run, posture, (sling head side to side, show teeth) or just charge. He does have a look humans might see as "Sweet, lunch has arrived!"
My friend was "slipping" his revolver to loosen the tension to holster before we got into the heavy cover. (So if a bear appears, one can draw the gun without it sticking in the holster) There are mostly black bears here but as this is the foothills of "The Bob" (Bob Marshall Wilderness), Grizzlies are known here too. Everyone who lives in this area has lost stock and or pets to the bears and Mountain lions. This past year one of their neighbors returned to find a lion in their house, had broken a window to get at their cat. The week before we were there a neighbor had to put down their dog who came home missing a leg. You really do have to pack heat when walking. I prefer this to the dangers in a city.

Why don't you all just feed the mountain lions so they don't have to eat your pets?

LOL. A while back our neighbor called us to ask if deer can climb trees. I am not making this up and she was serious. Turns out a lion had killed a deer and rather than "burying" it like they usually do, he dragged it up into a tree to keep it from being stolen by other animals. Yeah, they are strong enough to drag a deer up a tree.

They say leopards and Jaguars and cougars are pound for pound strong.

Nice photo essay Bill, and I like the artistic license....Isnt it great there are corners of the planet you can still go and immerse yourself in nature. Love it. Our week in the Bob Marshall this year was epic. Cheers

Gorgeous pictures Bill! One of the things I miss about living up north from here (Flagstaff area) is the changing of the aspen leaves. Nice job with the bear shop.. looks like you captured the dramatic moment in real time!
Thanks for the postcard perfect post!
