In a few weeks I will be in Vancouver Washington. Any suggestions where to go rock hounding in the Vancouver/Portland area? Also looking for rock shops.
Thanks, Andrea

You could head east over to Jones Creek. There's a quarry there that's known to produce some fine quartz crystals. Generally speaking, that whole area is good for finding carnelian, jasper, wood, and other pretties. Here's a DNR pdf with a map: www.dnr.wa.gov/Publications/eng_rms_jones_06_full.pdfBest of luck!

There's pretty good hounding in our back yard. Handley Rock and gem is a great store, Arlene Handley is a wealth of information. handleyrockandjewelry.com/Ed's House of Gems in Portland is a neat place too but if you only have time for one make it Handley. I have never been to Jones Creek quarry.

Thank you both. The Handley store is right by my friend's house. I hope we can make it to the Jones Creek quarry.

Andrea, I found an old trip report (2008) on the Cash and Treasures website of someone who's been to the quarry and found some nice crystals. Good detailed directions on how to get there too...Sounds like it's basically a dirt road to get to the actual quarry and apparently you'll have to compete with some ATV's and dirtbikes while you're there, but the guy took his sports car up the dirt road so it doesn't sound like you'll necessarily have to hike it to get there. Hopefully it'll be worth the trip. It's not too far from Vancouver. Here's the link: cashandtreasures.wikifoundry.com/thread/1608641/Trip+Report%3A+Jones+Creek+Quarry
