Here is a picture before sanding to give a better view as to whats going on. Still trying to get one or two angles finished that show all the curvatures and bumps that I left in there for texture. Just finished, ready to wear: Montana 2 x 2 inch Ready to wear and doing so already, to replace the Black jade, that now has to be readied and mounted before sending it off to Canada. By the way, the picture on the right in the finished piece: The piece hangs straight. The angle is just an optical illusion that came by chance when back-lit. Thanks for looking, Kurt

You are out there kk. another warp. Montana agate is sweet, add your carving and the show is won.

I just realized just how much I suck. ohh come on, no-one sucks. We are just at different stages, thats all. Don't know how long you have been trying, but here a few things to always consider.... I usually, copy (carbon-paper) a basic design onto the stone to get basic proportions, but then just let it go and go freehand as it feels right. Don't get too obsessed with an outcome, it rarely works out the way one envisions things at first. Just let it go. That will result in a number of unwanted pieces, but slowly your mind/hands will adjust and you will get the balance just right. Ohh yeah, one more thing when carving. Regardless what might go wrong in your design, never leave anything unfinished. If something breaks, carve around it, your design does not look like to work out, continue to the finishline. Ideas how to fix things come along the way and are the best lessons you will ever get. Plus; I can tell you, things look the worst, just before they work out just fine. In short: never give up on a piece and always finish something up, even if it goes right at the back of your drawer afterwards.

Beautiful work, kk! Always a treat to see your work. Agree with jamesp's comment!! Kurt, when do entries for the Jade Symposium have to be submitted? End of this month, plus need to calculate at least 3 weeks delivery, to ensue the piece is ready for the symposium in Vancouver.

Thank you everyone. Just thinking, maybe this coming weekend, I put together a Montana post with all the Montanas that keep them in my top 4 favorite materials since I started, about 4 years ago. Then, we can make it a monster-post with everyone being invited to add their own favorite finished pieces.

Beautiful...
Did you make that Montana post?? I would love it. I would love to see you do a tutorial or a step by step with a Montana. I have no clue what it takes to carve/sand MT...
Great Job

Starting is easy with a cut-out. The hard part is the ending, I'm slowly learning as to when enough is enough. Very often, ok, always, I still go overboard, and risk the elegance of simplicity.

I know what you mean you can overgrind a stone and it loses its ability to shine
