I have a similar saw in my line up - 10" with power feed and hood. Great size - I highly recommend. Sweet price on a nearly new unit. Cheers

Can you run it with water?

It has an aluminum tank, so sure you could. I wouldn't want to leave a nice blade sitting in water when the saw wasn't in use though. So you'd want to empty out and clean up after each use with water.

Hi, Liz and everyone: The manual is on-line here: www.barrancadiamond.com/pdf/manuals/saw/169351_BD10_OM.pdfOn page 10 it expressly says: "Under NO circumstances should any of the following fluids be used in any of our lapidary saws: Automotive Antifreeze Coolant - Ethylene glycol based automotive antifreeze and its vapors are considered hazardous and toxic. Propylene glycol based antifreeze is nontoxic but has practically no lubricating properties; it functions as a coolant only and its use will lead to rapid blade wear and dulling. Automotive Transmission Fluid - Does not have adequate lubricating proprieties for our saws; vapors are considered hazardous and toxic. Water - A good coolant but has no lubricating properties and causes rust and degradation of exposed iron and steel parts. Causes rapid blade dulling and premature wear. Use of water voids the warranty on all Barranca Diamond saws. CNC Machining Fluids - Water soluable synthetic coolants (i.e. Valenite or Cimtool) are often mixed in a 20:1 blend with water. Fluid vapors are considered hazardous. These fluids do not have adequate lubricating or rust inhibiting properties for the cast iron and steel parts in our slab and trim saws. Diesel, Heating Oil and Kerosene - Very flammable with a low flash point. At least 3 of our commercial cutting customers in Arizona and Pacific Northwest have burned down their shops using these fluids. Can be very tough to degrease the residue and aroma out of the cut slabs. These fluids are cheap, but very hazardous to use. Diesel is a benzene compound which is carcinogenic. All these fluids can cause severe skin rashes and other ailments." But going right along to page 12, it says: "FILL RESERVOIR - NOTE: The blade is manufactured to cut in either a petroleum, mineral or synthetic water soluble oil saw lubricant. Although water can be used with the BD10 Trim Saw, it is not recommended as the steel arbor shaft can rust. In addition, poor sawing performance and short blade life can result. If water must be used, it is recommended that a rust inhibitor such as Tool Cool (8 oz. Tool Cool to 1 gallon water) be added." So, it will/won't work and it will/won't cause problems/void the warranty. DO buy the thing, please, and remove temptation from my path! Cheers, Jack

Water with Lube Cool 4800, let it sit. Have been doing it for years. It is not as good as oil but I can use it in the basement.......MrP

Touseled Owl, (JackK - Thank you for that contribution. Hard data or just straightline info from mfr is a valuable thing. I was asked the question about some of those alternatives the other day and could provide only rumors, opinions, and biases, but now I can offer up you data sheet. Tom

Saw can be used with water if drained after use and blade dried. I believe the shaft is stainless steel but blade nut is not. On the saw we demo'ed in Tucson using Lube Cool the nut got rusty in the 10 days we left solution in saw. We did not have a problem two Denver shows ago using the Smokey's EZ Cut and leaving it in the saw. The saw tank and table are aluminum so no issues there. The blade core will rust quickly if left submerged in plain water. BD has the oil must be used or warranty voided notices but have started plating all cast iron vise components and steel slide rods on their larger saws to accommodate the universities and test labs using their slab saws to cut where oil is not an option. If they turned up a cheap HP14 saw it would end up in my garage. That is a really nice saw.

The first two years out they were in the $1600-$1695 range. I think it was two years ago they raised most of their prices 30%. Made in USA and only company to use Baldor motors. Everything heavy duty. HP 14 now lists for $2642. They had it on sale at Denver Show for $2245 I think. Always on Winter Sale but never below $2200-$2300. I can discount off their sale prices if you are interested. At 230 lbs. crated shipping can be a big cost too.

I just checked and the "Denver Show" specials are included in a "Fall Sale" through Nov 30. $2495 for HP14 and discounted price $2121 plus freight.

The Rock Shed seems to have it listed at an everyday price of $2100
I knew first time I saw that saw that I'd be getting one, just keeping an eye out for a "deal". Doubt that finding a used unit any time soon is very likely.

I can match the $2100. It is a great saw. Based on the always popular Star Diamond 14". I have never seen a used one for sale. If you could find one of the early ones that were $1600 you could save a little maybe but they have made many small improvements since they came out.
