I was inspired by the lady playing the Frank-O-Phone/jade music maker/lithosomething so I thought I would throw one together. WRONG. Not as easy as I thought. The way I have it set up now some of the jade pieces do not ring like the could so I have to try another way. I have an idea but it is going to take a little time to get it put together. One reason for the delay is the fact that I have lost the heavy gauge aluminum wire that I need for my new idea. I believe that the problem is the cord cinched tight around the stone killing some of ability to vibrate. I am totally music illiterate so that doesn't help matters at all. Babble, babble, babble. Sooo anyway here is what I have so far. I will update when my friend the drummer who is getting this as a gift can play it a little, if it will ever make music. Jim

One of the problems that you might have is/are the drilled holes. I think, they are the ones who will change vibration and might even be the reason for sound overall. When you look at xylophones in general, and the video, the pieces are always on relative hard/solid material. Not suspended like a wind-chime.

what about setting the rocks on bamboo/wooden rails and pegging them loosely with pegs (bamboo, wooden too?) Would that absorb less of the vibration? Weren't the rocks in the original video rested on wooden rails? (so heavy they didn't dislodge when she struck them) Interesting work in progress, how neat that you are doing this! looking forward to hearing them played.

I think the heavy chord you have the jade strung together with is killing the sound. I also think that each piece of jade should be "suspended" separately and not all strung together like you have them.
I once made a "poor mans" xylophone out of 3/4" electrical conduit. It only had the 8 notes of a musical scale,,,do,re,mi,fa,sol,la,ti,do but it rang out like a bell! Good luck and have fun. connrock

Like I said above, I am music illiterate so I only have "do" "me" "fast" "or" "slow". Not sure what key it is in. Jim

Jim, Check out this link: www.craftymusicteachers.com/bassmarimba/bars.htmlAbout half way down the page you can see a little picture on the left of someone holding a bar in one hand and a mallet hitting the bar about in the middle. What you can do is adjust where you hold the bar (up or down) along the length of the bar and tap the bar in the middle as you go until the tone is the loudest. Mark the position where you are holding the bar and that is where you should support the bar in your instrument. You probably should put a piece of wood or something underneath these node points rather than suspend it by the cord. Tuning the bars to certain notes requires a bit of grinding. If you want the tone to be higher frequency you should have a relative shorter length bar and lower frequency requires a longer length bar. For wood bars, you can grind an arch in the middle of the bar and the deeper the arch, the lower the note you will get. I've had to do quite a bit of research on this because I've been building marimbas (wood xylophone) for my daughter's school. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress. Keep up the good work! Justin

I have thought of jade keys on a tongue drum
Or this style, would require a large slab of jade
