Today and tomorrow. I went today and it was almost a bust. Not much slabs and after browsing the bins for a while I gave up. This show is generally minerals and jewelry. The web site indicated the West Coast Gems would be there (I've bought from them on ebay), but he wasn't. Jadecarver was suppose to be there and he was but had no wheels with him. I had a nice conversation with about the hard wheels he sells now and the all steel ones he use to sell. He said the plastic centered wheels should last as long as the all steel wheels but the steel wheels are very slightly truer in rotation. The steel wheels are two heavy for a Genie. He doesn't have the 8" steel wheels anymore. I bought one from him a long time ago and when I tried to mount a while back it wouldn't fit on my arbor. He gave some helpful advice on what I could do. I ended up buying a 220 grit wheel from him which he will ship for free and would have brought it to me tomorrow if I wanted.
Ameritool was also there and I bought a nice magnifying glass that was on a stand.
I guess slabs are a little too hard core for people who go to these gem shows.

Thanks for the write-up. We almost went this morning but decided not to because last year's show was exactly what you described - very few slab dealers with any quality at all and zero rough to be found.
No offense please if anyone here is a member of the CCMGS but my wife and I joined and went to meetings for about six months before quitting because it reminded us of a close-knit pot-luck social group and we felt like we didn't fit in at all. When people won't even look you in the eye let alone try to make you feel welcome, there's something troubling brewing under the surface.

I'm a cabbing guy. Most of the people on this board create along with collecting. There is some kind of artistic sensibility. I'm not a mineral guy. My wife collected the minerals, mainly for the metaphysical qualities and beauty. The guys at the mineral society recruitment table seemed uncomfortable being there and I also noticed a lack of eye contact. I'm sure they don't represent all of the membership. The only organization I joined was the American Contract Bridge League. The membership is friendly and inclusive.
I don't get to go to many shows. The most memorable ones were the Roseville Rock Rollers, the annual State Show and a show I attended in Reno. I think it was at the state show that they had a bunch of used lapidary equipment for sale outside.

A couple weeks ago we displayed at the El Dorado show in Placerville. West Coast Gems was there and for a change he had some rough and a few slabs. He said in a month they were going to the Sage Plume site and dig. Its been a few years since any good material has come from there. A bad economy will do that every time. Good thing now is the price of fuel seems to be dropping. Most dealers don't want to lug rough material around and get $3 to $5 a pound for it when they can lug a $750 ring around with very little effort. The El Dorado show had a few slab dealers but it was a slow show. Sacramento show is this weekend. Bob
