A couple guys came by this morning and asked if I wanted to go explore the Hohokam Indian archaeological site in the field behind my house. I told them yes & I would catch up with them.
I was walking up to the site picking up small rocks and things, when I came across an excellent piece of slag or is it meteorite? It was certainly unusual and not indigenous to that area. It was fairly large piece. So instead carrying it on I marked a location and left there. I then walked on to the archaeological site. About 100 yards.
Coming back… ya think I could find that rock? No! The other guys even helped me search for it
I just went back into that field with a pair of binoculars. I scanned the field and walked pretty far in. Its kind of an off limits area and I was by myself and its getting late in the afternoon. So I’ve abandoned the search for now
Anyway the guy I was with said I should have marked the location with my shirt or something similar. Sound like a good idea.
Needless to say its a mystery.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s ever lost a rock hounding ?

Been there done that *L*. Probably have ten rock hammers strung out across the desert too. Took to wrapping then with bright red tape for awhile and somehow still lost them even with the tape. Now I don't put them down anymore if i can help it......Mel

I never leave a rock,I carry them to the location I entend to hunt, than put it in a spot that I mark pretty good for ID'ing... If I have to many rocks,I just leave them there, till the next go around... Only lost a few before that, learned the hard way too Ed.... Keep at it,you will find it!

Here’s another mystery form the Hohokam site I don’t expect any answers from this picture but the picture is taken in the archaeological dig. Basically a rectangular hole --6 feet deep. This line of rocks are 4 feet down from that surface. The rocks extend, I image, all away across the field and as far back as the field. Its like there was originally all those rocks laying on the surface and they got covered over. The dig exposed them. I’ve taken a picture of it before years ago. I can’t get an explanation. And that the other thing that irks me. I had my camera and didn’t take a picture of the slag/meteorite rock.

Maybe not an adequate explanation for this occurrence, but an observation of what happens in my area is that over time the rocks settle and sink until they hit the clay that underlays the topsoil.Varies depending on how deep the topsoil is.Undisturbed soil will be rockfree until the harder base is reached. In your photo,it seems to be a slightly lighter colored soil underneath the rock layer, which could indicate a harder subsurface, unless its my imagination! Mostly! snuffy

We always carry some toilet paper, have marked several bushes for a return trip [too much stuff for one haul], and the other reason is evident.

I just took a nice hour stroll out in the archaeological field no rock found !
It’s a flat field with very few rocks especially larger ones-like fist size
I put this particular rock on a old piece of plastic that was laying out there I figured it would stick out that way and I took notice of the green metal fence post which was about 20 yards away
So within 20 yard radius of that fence post is my possible slag/meterorite.
Either I’m a really really lousy rock hound or something else is afoot.
mostly

Thanks Mike ‘cept I think I’m going have to quit obsessing about it
It was unique rock for that area but nothing overly special I think
Photobucket is down right now I’ll be posting a picture of the field then you’ll see why it shouldn’t be so difficult to locate

Ha ha snowmom! yes the Hohokam didn't have a lot of modern amenities although they were very desertly creative!
and there are still folks that live back there homeless I suppose but then we would call the Hohokam homeless?
it is one reason why I tread back there by myself carefully there probably harmless
Photobucket is still down but I have a good overview picture to post that rock is complete mystery

here’s a sampling of the field it’s a huge empty field probably 300 acre my backyard is in the distance it been kept vacant because this was major a Hohokam site city & freeway are all around at least that my idea why it been vacant for a 100 years as you can see it not very rocky that why the mystery rock should stand out you can make out the dig mounds I should get some better pictures
