I'm brand new to rock polishing although I've picked up rocks for years. I have a vibe and want to put in a batch of crinoid limestone chunks...some other fossils mixed in?? What grit do I start them at. I'll take any/all advice. thank you!

how hard it is. the crinoid marble from China, with dark solid marble, tumbles OK. some very solid limestones also polish
but I have seen fossil limestone that was crumbly - it will only turn to mud.
starting grit is always course (120g in vibes) - even when the stones are approximately the right shape. it is to get uniform scratches/surface at 120g. if the shape is about right it will take less time in course, but course cannot be skipped.

Hello Angelo,
First, welcome aboard. A great bunch of people here and they are happy to share. I have learned so much from them.
As for the crinoid, it depends on how hard it is. Most crinoid limestone is too soft to put in either a tumbler or a vibe. But if it is hard it might work. Some of the silicified stuff takes a good shine and makes nice jewelry. Let us know how it comes out.

Yeah, I have the Chinese material and the Lambert Rch stuff from Texas which is a bit harder I think, and neither will tumble all that well for me. Just a bit too soft to take a real good polish. Sort of a satin finish only....Mel

Doesn't marble and limestone tend to gas off big time in a tumbler? That's what Elizabeth tells me, And she's the chief tumbler around here.

the fossils we find in limestone here are silicate and they do best being hand polished due to the varied nature of hardness.
