We have Versalumes but they don't work well if there is any moon to speak of. You have to hold light at ground level unless it is absolutely dark out. We sold little flashlight type lights for a while. Worked well. Not as many LED's as these. One thing we found is the cheap Chinese batteries that came with them started leaking after a few months. We had to keep batteries out until sold. And at time of sale we had to advise customers to not leave batteries in when not in use.

The versalumes are mainly showcase lights but I found nothing for field searching yet thats portable. for short wave

I have to talk about a couple flashlights I have that are black light UV Long wave.
After Glenn raving about his eBay purchase I decided to try it out. We have tested it in the field and I conclude that my $10 Walmart black light (hunting and fishing section) was way brighter and did a much better job at helping us find the materials we were hunting (corundum-ruby).
The bigger flashlight did work, but the corundum glowed brighter under the Walmart 9Led flashlight compared to the 100 bulb (or whatever it is) from eBay.
That is all

That is all what type of light and nm range is it? my guess is its a lower nm range like my friends uv light (worse or amber better for other minerals) that doesn't put out much white light... also how far away can you see an object with it?

We also sold Raytech short and long 6 watt each with rechargeable batteries. You could get it with both short wave too. Those were expensive but amazing. We lit up samples at indoor shows even with all the lights on. The price kept most people from buying but after we dropped Raytech products everyone asked for them.

My raytech doesn't cover distance like my led does.

Can you get a photo of what the different lights look like on a white paper for a side by side comparison broseph82 and an approx distance the wallmart one goes. It could be possible that mine is only the best for my local amber since that is purely what I use it for. It is a battery hog though so I would like something a little different that does the same job.

While amber does fluoresce the amber I find kind of does in regular light so the uv enhances this... other minerals like corundum in your case don't show the hints of the uv color in natural light.

Left is Ea-bay light and right is the Waulmart light glennz01Thanks broseph82Hard to say from the pic but does the wallmart light have a darker purple hue to it? It looks like it does since the 100 bulb is more blue and has more white power. For where i'm at I don't think the wallmart light would do as good with ak amber as it looks like my friends 50 bulb which has a dark purple as well. If that is the case whatever my friend had might be a little better in your case. I know that in my area range from uv emmisions is needed as i'm in a large pit canyon looking up scree slopes several hundred feet high. It would be interesting to see the difference the uvs do on your ruby / chorundom. I guess when choosing a uv light it is really a matter of what mineral your looking for to know what kind of wavelegnth spectrum (un longwave) to get and power. Along with knowing the area. If I was searching flat areas I think the wallmart light would have worked fine. So there is no "best" uv light but the best for the area. Although in terms of power from led I havent seen anything that is more powerful... but i'm still searching.

Since youre the "expert" on Longwave UV flashlights there's no point in me providing further pictures. The pics show up clear and crisp via a mobile device compared to computer.

I'm not saying i'm an expert... For hunting AK amber I know what works but elseware different lights could be better for different minerals. This is the best light that works for amber here but for other things I don't know which is why I would have liked to see a pic on corundum or ruby.
