Wife and I met up with fantastic5 and a couple of her friends for a day of rockhounding, rock busting, and to eat at a place later on that had no menu. The weather was great, the walk to get there was on a railroad track for about a mile, and we got to see the train go by. Here are some pics A road near the tracks that had nothing but Jasper: Walking to the quarry: Photo time whilst picking up jasper: Something that once used to be a bridge or something: Where we found a good bit of dolomite and lots of Druzy quartz: Here's Fatanstic5 watching the train as it passed us: My wife, Tina and Dave. Dave told us he would tell us his secrets of rockhounding at this point (we couldn't hear anything but the train!). Good laughs. Burned down house that was built in the 1800's: We also went to a location that has tons of trilobites. My wife was more than happy to just sit and break open shale and find surprises inside. I think I even found a fish fossil in one! Darkness came quickly so we didn't get to stay long. I'll post pics of our finds from this weekend later. Today we have two more places to go to find goodies! It's after 5:00am and I've been up for a couple hours with anticipation and excitement.

Had a great time with broseph82, his wife, 1derwoman (Tina) and my friend Dave. Got to visit two places that none of us had been to. I really enjoy the adventure of looking for someplace I've never been and then looking for rocks once I get there. I did bring home some nice dolomite from the old quarry, but never did get dialed in for the fluorite or barite that is reputed to be there. Dave found a really cool old piece of sculptural iron slag (?) near the quarry that he generously gave to me (of course I had to tote the 20+ lb back along the tracks in my bucket cart).
It's been a long time since I've hiked RR tracks, and even longer since I had a train pass. Even before we could see the train the tracks started to ring like a finger on a crystal glass. Really cool. Grabbed for my phone to shoot a video really quick and just caught the noise as it started to osculate like a long metal bow. Listen for the noise just as the train arrives. Really cool!

I'll have to figure out a way to host it someplace other than Facebook. Sorry

Looks like y'all had a great time! The Quarry looks like a cool place to explore! Was the Trilobite place on the river? Too bad you could not hear Dave's secrets!

You could not have picked better company Jimi. Tina and Ann will walk thru a lion's den, no fear in those two.
Don't be surprised if they walk you past the state line.

The whole area from Summerville/Ringold SE to Cartersville is a great rock hunting area. Hwy 411 between Rome and Cartersville namely around Kingston has fine jaspers. Used to be an open pit barite mine 30 years ago near Kingston, some fine barite in crystal form, heavy material. Some fine waxy jet black flint in the area the area around Kingston that was fracture free and was pick material for natives to make arrowheads. Extensive native populations in about every AG field in the area. An access on the SE corner of the 411 bridge will get you down to the Etowah River. The cobbles in the river are some fine rocks to collect in summer weather. Helps to bring a big hammer. Found these about a mile up the Etowah River at a stone fish weir crossing the river from 411 bridge. About 30 years ago in a corn field. Mississippi era 'bird points'. Launched with tiny bows for rabbits and squirrels. same age as Etowah Mound Culture. Made of the choice black flint/jasper in the area. from one of 5 camps in the 500 acre corn field. Camps apparent from on high as the 1-2 acre camps were of stained soil from ancient campfires. These from camp #4 going counter-clockwise starting from the downstream bend in the river above 411 hwy crossing. Three had stone fish weirs adjacent. A dead give away that artifacts on bluffs above. perhaps the ground eye glasses to knap these tiny pieces of art work. Smallest point in all of my finds: Some more:

Like #3.5 reading glasses for a start sharp eyes & a feel for the stone micro finesse mostly They can probably make those blind folded, like you said Ed, a feel for the stone. I can say that my eyes never got bad till sitting behind a computer starting 3 years ago. They never had that issue.

Looks like y'all had a great time! The Quarry looks like a cool place to explore! Was the Trilobite place on the river? Too bad you could not hear Dave's secrets! Trilobites were found at the site you turned me and Tina on to. We only had about 30 minutes of rapidly diminishing light so finds were limited but still plentiful, will go back when I can spend more time. Thanks so much for that lead! Trying to remember your stabilizing recipe, 50/50 Elmer’s glue and water overnight then air dry?
