Our whitetails shed their velvet more than a month ago. Have the cedars all ripped to shreds where they've been sharpening their antlers. We have to put wire around the trees we don't want shredded. Dang things break off a lot of tree branches too. They're also psycho as all get out right now too ( common rut term: crazier than a Pelosi)....Mel

Marking their territory in the rut.....They have glands in their forehead that give off a powerful oder,so they mark their areas by scraping the ground with urine and rubbing their heads on trees..... Other deer(bucks) smell it,so they either leave or wait and fight it out....

It is rut behavior. their necks swell up from sparing with trees and other bucks. Whitetails in the hood: Butchering this one today. It walked in the wrong backyard

damn, sausage season is here. This dudes recipes never fail me. Maybe you will try one for something new. It is sad when they lock, often they starve. Thanks for the recipes. Hard to get me away from plain burgers w/5-10% beef fat. That and jerky. I do not like deer meat. But the deer burgers better than any beef. Strange. Tonights hunt very exciting. Hunted last 1.5 hours to dark. Heard a sapling being shaken very violently. probably a 15 foot poplar. Very dry, heard him coming right at me down a ridge ending, me at creek, in the thick. and he turned before I could see him. Probably the same mediocre 8 pointer I saw this morning. Heard him rummaging, maybe a couple of does w/him, near his scrape. It is a common ploy to shake a sapling back. thought he was going to walk over me, but not. Have only heard them shake like that a few times ever.

And you can smell their bed room. They urinate on their scrapes and yo that smells. Maybe if you stop taking showers you will become even more of chick magnet Brad. Yesterday I went out at prime time(moon directly overhead) about 9:30AM. To where the trees in the above photos were recently mauled. I watched an 8 point teenager buck about 170 pounds of testosterone and fight. I grunted at him and he turned 180 degrees-twice. The sun was coming thru the thicket and I could see him circle around my back about 70 yards away. He stopped on the way and cleaned the leaves off his scrape. But he spent a good while looking in my direction up on the ridge. Last night I went to the same place, 30 minutes before sun down. Right at 6:15 I heard a sappling being attacked and shaken violently. Probably one of the 15 foot poplars making up the thicket up on the ridge. Then I could hear him advancing in the dry leaves to the same position the morning deer was peeking at me. Guessing it was the same buck. And heard me coming in. And was protesting my presence. I was 50 yards from his scrape, down wind from it and his ridge. This time the sun was not behind him, so I never laid eyes on him. Started hearing other deer in the direction of his scrape, guessing his girlfriends coming to socialize. They must be in season, making him an idiot mauling the trees and bravely coming close. All the time I was hoping for his big brother to come and oust him from his throne. Years ago I shoot a nice buck. Upon walking up on him i noticed blood all over his head. I also noticed him walking as if drunk. Walking upwind toward me and my cigarette smoke. They just don't do that. His ears had been sliced in three places, 2-3 inches long. He had punctures in the hide covering his skull. He was basically beat to hell. Last week I heard antlers clanking for 30 minutes a long ways away. Could not hear the dry leaves under them, but definitely that notorious sound of antlers doing battle. Their behavior is interesting. Probably the main reason i 'hunt'. Their behavior is intriguing.

When I hunted,I never shaved, bathed with homemade soap, never washed the hunting clothes and left my boots in the trk... Used a scent away that was like smelling the forest floor...Fox urine on the boots.. I could get up to within 6 feet of does before they would spook, they couldn't see me,but they knew something wasn't right... Damn straight, the fossilman was about to raise hell on em'..............LOL
Many people didn't like hunting with me,but it was their loss...........My freezer was full every season..Thumbs up

So, was that buck that was scrubbing on the tree a 10 pointer? (Eastern count) I saw him twice yesterday, about a 160-180 pound teenager 8 point, 2.5 years old. sex crazed about like you and I when we were 22 and could kick buttocks, or thought we could. Was hunting him to see if big brother would bump him out of the saddle. He had a couple of receptive does w/him. The day they come in the big one will run him off-James waiting. He is amusing and stupid, don't think he can see 3 feet, walks w/the wind, and unresponsive to me yelling at him. The old man is waiting while he entertains the does.
