Well, it was too early in "the season" so there wasn't a whole lot out there jade-wise (need some major storms). This dinky piece is about the size of a white grape. It's pretty much "Willow Creek jade", but it has qualities of what a couple of people call "Calico jade". (This piece is naturally polished)

I can see the slight pattern under the skin, and the black and green areas. Will you cut or polish this, or just admire it? What do you do with your jade? (more pictures!) that's a hint

Something of this type is best left alone. Local folks call it a "slick/natural". I'm thinking this piece will either be left alone or turned into a key chain. Some of the rough jade, i'll have someone polish it. Small bits and bobbles, I just horde them somewhere. I'll assemble some pics in the near future.

Maybe you can confirm this for me. I picked up this slab a couple years ago, and the vendor mentions it was from Big Sur. Have you ever seen any like this from around you? On a closer pic in sunlight on the cab I pulled out of it. There was some gold inside? Thanks.

Was the "slick" from Willow Creek? That was always our favorite collecting beach around there. A lot of water polished smaller pebbles end up as "pocket rocks".

spiritstone:I am but a novice when it comes to jade hunting. First of all, one must confirm that it is jade. Does it scratch with steel? If not, a "specific gravity test" (I think that is what it is called)can help determine whether it is indeed jade. I've turned the picture over to two people that REALLY knows their Big Sur jade...and hopefully give some input. But what I can say is that I have seen stones very similar to this pulled out of Jade Cove South.

johnjsgems:Yes Willow Creek indeed. The strange thing it resembles the stuff I normally find in Middle Jade Cove.

I was looking to see if it could be confirmed that it was from the area. What you mention is good to know already. Thanks for any extra info u can come up with is appreciated.

spiritstone:Hello again. The two people that I asked said it would be difficult for an absolute definitive answer without being able to hold it in their hands and seeing it up close. (Both are jade carvers) Do you by chance have more pictures? They did however state that "there is a very good chance" to "very possible" that it is "Big Sur Jade".

Thanks again Henry. I had a good feeling the vendor wasnt pulling my hat over my eyes on the locality. You dont have to go back to see them to confirm it, I think you did great and I appreciate it. This is how it turned out cabbed. Freeform shape. You can see the gold in the black pocket in the pic.

spiritstone:Just to follow-up...the gentleman that I asked (who just happened to make my "sharkfin") believes that "the piece looks good" and there is a likelihood that it may come from the "Middle Jade Cove" vein. Just thought you would like to know.

Your Big Sur slab made a killer cab, spiritstone!! It looks like it has chatoyancy? Think I see something shiny gold in the corner of the pocket.

Thanks again Henry. GBK No chatoyancy in this one, thanks. If I can find a 10 inch saw then I can show you some with it. Still working on it.
