I'm going to assume that you want to just use the slab as the front of the buckle, and not put it on a mounting or anything. (That's the only way I like to do them.) First, you'll need to select a template. If you go to here: www.acebuckles.com/template/default.aspx, then they will have a bunch of pdf files you can download and then cut out to get your shape from. I've looked for other good templates for belt buckle shapes, and unfortunately haven't been able to find any yet. Once you have the shape outlined, then you form it like any other cabochon... just on a bigger scale then you might be used to. Once it is shaped, then you use a belt buckle finding (such as 4N16 from www.therockshed.com/findings4.html), and then epoxy it to the back of the buckle. Hope this helps a bit. Jeff

you can get an epoxy that won't let loose. get one of the glue-on-the-back belt buckle findings form the rock shed "4FN15 This is a make your own belt buckle, you can glue on any kind of stone you would like to create a unique look. They measures 1 3/4" in length by 1" in height."

Maybe make her 2 belt buckles, a durable cabochon buckle for horseback and the glued on slab buckle for other times.

You do not want a perfectly smooth back. You want an area that is rougher so the glue has a place to really adhere. Also, roughen up the back of the buckle for the same resaon.

expoxied slabs aren't coming off before the slab itself breaks.
