A tumbler that comes with an instruction book that is really meaningful and helpful is quite a find. What is the volume capacity of the tub?

A tumbler that comes with an instruction book that is really meaningful and helpful is quite a find. What is the volume capacity of the tub? it is 14 pounds. I weighed two loads and it is accurate. Been pondering making one and thinking about a lot of treated wood for the structure. Would make adjustments and tuning easier.

Will have to stop wearing pajamas when photo ing. Maybe the Smurf PJs, but I think the Scooby Doo set will be fine with this crowd. Once you get this vibe thing figured out (in a quickness no doubt) what are you going to do with all the rock you will be putting out? That's one reason I've held off on a vibe. I don't want/need that many tumbled rocks! There must be past threads on what folks do with all their tumbles. Wandering of to search for such threads. Sure to be entertaining.

I may make jewelry out of them one day. Love metal work. Mostly base metals. And chipping thin pieces that are thin and light weight that would serve as good subjects. Coral, wonderstone, obsidian, some agates make good percussion shapes. The coral is heatable and has a lot of variety from many locations, it is an excuse to get out and collect. I stayed away from a vibe too. Seemed like high maintenance. don39 said he runs 90 grit for a week and then goes straight to polish. that is low maintenance enough for me. But the rotary is sure necessary to round them good. Fake velvet camo was the Pj theme.

You are hooked now James! Send me your address James and I will send you a box of rocks. I have it at home in Nc. But not here in Quartzsite. I can get a bunch of Green Banded Ryolite fairly easy. It is softer than jasper but polishes pretty good as a cab. You saw it different directions to get splotchy or another way to get bands or on some it's a swirly! Keep on tumbling! We gonna get you into the tumble cab mode now that you have a vibe!

A tumbler that comes with an instruction book that is really meaningful and helpful is quite a find. What is the volume capacity of the tub? Looking at cost to try a build Larry. At Surplus Center. Using old 1/4 HP 1725 motor and my own 1/2" shafts, wood/metal hybrid construction, PVC barrel. I think 4" PVC is plenty, say 14 inches long. There ain't much hardware. It's the positioning and correct springs that intimidate. Here's my (starting) parts order: 4 - 1/2 inch pillar blocks=4 X $7.80= $31.20 9 - 2.45 inch cast iron sheaves = 4 X $5.25 = $21.00 20 - 1/2 inch locking collars = 20 X $1.30 = $26.00 1 - 3.35 inch motor sheave = $8.40 Totals $86.60 so, $100 incl. shipping. Two pillar blocks for the eccentric shaft. Two pillar blocks for the speed increase shaft(don39's idea) 9 sheaves, 4 for eccentrics, 4 for two sided O-ring drive from speed increase shaft to eccentric shaft. *Assuming O-rings will work in the saddle of the A-belt saddle... And one for the A- belt coming off the motor. Will grind one side of the sheaves for the off balance. Locking collars cheap and handy, keeps things in place, 20 too many but so cheap. And the up ratio motor sheave to deliver final 2600 RPM to eccentric shaft(gotta check the ratio closer) any thoughts ??

Yep, velvet Pj's and candy arse cigarettes. How can such a person be a deer slayer. I used to go to the Taco Mac on my motorcycle in furry bedroom slippers. It is a bit of a notorious meat market/biker bar. Over in Douglas county. Rowdy spot. Got looks, not sure if they thought I was light on my feet or just plain crazy.

Congrats on the first vibe batch. Came out really nice. Any thoughts on "re-polishing" any of your old favorites?

With millions of cool rocks. I hope your engine blows up-just kidding, but am very jelly-ish. Who is doing the driving, guessing the dear wife. I think you are rotten. Be careful, travel safe. When you/if you get back send me that ryolite for all the emotional distress you have caused. Thanks in advance.

Congrats on the first vibe batch. Came out really nice. Any thoughts on "re-polishing" any of your old favorites? Yes tk, I short cutted a lot of polish batches. Will do. thanks for congrats. Kinda takes a lot of the wait out, and the superior polish seems about guaranteed. It was easy for my first try and gave confidence. And not so much emphasis on slurry and barrel fullness. And filler in many cases. Amazed at how little grit it takes. The polish I have on all the tumbles would be fixed to wet in 24 hours easy per load. am long over due.

Superb finish on that batch James! Great Job, with fantastically beautiful material! Thanks for all the pics as usual. I think I like the photography as much as the rock hobby Ian. I always check your pics out. Real good job on focus and artificial light. Much less the tumbles from your beautiful exotic beaches. Being shadowed by those beautiful mountains. I need to calm down before I go into another jealous rage LOL My buddies went to Scotland years ago. Beer and redheads, they still rub it in. I wish they would shut up.

I really like the coral! What caught my interest was the glass filler. Was it used in the last cycle only? The glass looks like another fun material to work with too.

I do like glass Bill, it is fun to work with. Red and yellow glass can be colored w/ gold and silver especially in the old days. so I collect them to break up for the tumbler one day. the glass is tricky to tumble, maybe the vibe will get it done. Yes, using it for filler. It is cool blue glass from a glass recycler. If your gonna have filler it might as well be pretty. It is already crushed to 3/8-1/2 for re-melt by the recycler. That is a mess saver. i use it in all stages of some things like obsidian, or just to add material at late stages. I tumble larger rocks, the small glass helps get in the nooks. and fills the space between the bigger rocks w/out raising the level of the rocks much. Seems to be a great carrier of grit and padding.

But have learned a lot tinkering with the rotaries. I kinda knew the vibe would do what it does. I thought they were gonna require a lot of attention and break a lot. But I don't think so. I may try to build one. Like making stuff like that. However, it may be a flop. Got a good one to copy. The pipe motion is simpler than a round barrel one. Not necessarily better, just simpler. You have every right to do a 'I told you so'. I agree. submitting honorably

Once I get the two story tumbler going I'll have to start using glass as the filler in the late stages. I've saving glass for a year or two. No, not "all" beer bottles.
