Once I get the two story tumbler going I'll have to start using glass as the filler in the late stages. I've saving glass for a year or two. No, not "all" beer bottles. If you live near a big city you most likely have a glass recycler near you. Other than beer brown and green.

and did I read somewhere you were able to knapp wonderstone? huh? I can't even get min to break! The wonderstone was from Montana, bsky4463 Andy in a coral trade. Was reading the knapping forum and they said it has varying degrees of silica in it. They said the silica content had an influence on knapabaility and heat treatment. Well this stuff Andy sent me chips like glass, but has a slight grainy face. We traded once before and he had a single piece of wonderstone. That was the one I tapped and was amazed at how well it chips. So this time he sent a big tumbler barrel full. I noticed on the knap forum some fine colors in the points they made of WS. The colors were intense along with the patterns. And it looks like iron type colors when I first viewed it. And the first thing that went through my mind is that it would go ape shnitt w/colors if heated. The WS is also very homogenous, great for long points since it has about no fractures. Can't wait to cook it. Andy's shipment, colors richer in photo than real life, but pretty stuff none the less: Heat treated point, about the colors I expect to get from looking at iron content of Andy's stuff:

The knappers heat treat to get it to chip easier, but also to leave a waxy finish instead of a grainy finish. Will cook photo #6 as a test. Have test cooked many mosses and plumes and other agate formed in volcanic formations and had them turn dog turd brown. Totally ruined them. May have gotten them to hot, maybe my faux pax. Curious how rhyolite formed. The main reason I wanted it was for the heat treatment. I think it will be wildomatic looking. And should chip fine tumbles with little effort. Can chip w/the bands or cross the bands.

bitchin' totally bitchin' New material for me. Reading about it. particles of volcanic glass compressed by overburden and heat bonded the particles. Yes, iron oxides color it. Comes in masses and boulder size too. This looks like Utah type. Mexico and Neveda has it. Bit tricky to polish, cerium oxide is choice polish. Cabs I looked at were expensive, may have been due to seller having high pricing.

I have cut the Nevada wonderstone. It is super tough and almost jade like. Takes a great polish under Tin Oxide. Most definitely NOT glassy. I have samples of the New Mexico wonderstone from NM Stone Supply. Haven't cut it yet, so no observations. Thanks for all your observations on Andy's bad@ss wonderstone!

James - glad the package arrived safely. Cant wait to see what it looks like when you get thru giving it the jamesp treatment. Knapped WS - way cool. Where we collect this stuff is a total trip, ridge line with it just coming out of the ground. Looks like a tie-died blanket straight out of the 70s. Cheers
