in the last photo you can see what I think might be a fossil imprint or something in the broken area. More at the top of the broken area.

That is an awesome septarian nodule, bhiatt! Haven't ever seen one like it, and it's understandable why the couple that had it thought it was a turtle fossil. (have you fed it yet? ) They still wanted fossil turtle money for it. ROFL!

Sometimes you can revive them with a long soak in room temperature water.

If I found that, I would have posted it in the Fossils section and wanted turtle money, or tortoise money for it. Nice specimen.
Darryl.

I still look at it and see areas that I second guess and think turtle.lol A fossil turtle found in Utah I would think would have some good value since about a hand full of them have only been found in that state.

my recipe for reviving that turtle
Add enough water to cover the turtle and any aromatics that you want to include, such as bay leaves, black peppercorns, celery, onion or garlic cloves & a jalenos if desired. Season the mixture with some salt. Bring it to a boil over medium-high heat before reducing the heat to medium-low or low and simmer it for two to three hours, or until the turtle meat is extremely tender. Periodically skim the top to remove any scum or foam that forms. Very important! Remove the rock from the pot. Discard the bones, if there are any, and oil wax the shell. Strain the slurry through a fine mesh sieve and set it aside.
Melt some butter or heat a little oil over medium-high heat. Stir in a bit of all-purpose flour to make a roux. Cook the flour and butter mixture for approximately 10 minutes or until it develops a deep golden color, stirring it constantly. Add aromatic vegetables such as onion, celery, green bell pepper and garlic, for a Creole-inspired turtle soup. Alternatively, use standard soup veggies such as onion, carrot, garlic and celery. After cooking the vegetables for five minutes, add the turtle meat and begin adding the stock 1 cup at a time until the soup has the desired consistency. Optionally, stir in crushed tomatoes or tomato puree, Worcestershire sauce and cayenne pepper to taste. Simmer the soup for approximately 15 to 25 minutes to soften the vegetables.
Right before serving the soup, stir flavor enhancers such as hot sauce, freshly squeezed lemon juice and sherry into the soup. Optionally, you can add spinach and chopped or sliced hard-boiled egg. Adjust the seasoning or salt level, if necessary. Strain out any bay leaves and ladle the soup into bowls. For added flavor, drizzle a little extra sherry on top of the soup. The soup can also be served with rice or dumplings.
I’m not really sure this will revive the turtle but the oilED waxxED septurian turtle rock will make a nice place setting while you enjoy the soup.
bon appetite

mohs, what type of oil should bhiatt use to 'revive' the turtle? Do folks oil septarian nodules?
