Ok my rockhounding friends,help me out!!!!! I bought this rough yesterday,its a 5 1/2 pounder,heavy for its size..It's green,has an agate or chert feel and look to it.... They said it was from California,that's about all I know about it-sorry........... It's more of a mint green in person...

It does look Like a Franciscan Formation chert. That particular type outcrops in many areas in California's coast ranges and Sierra Foothills. I've noted occurrences in the south Bay area near Coyote Hills, Hunters Valley ( where the geologic member is called is called Hunters Valley Chert) and in Creston, Indian Valley and even over in Parkfield where it is found in the same creeks with Stone Canyon jasper. Greens or green streaked with red brown are the most common color patterns. Takes a heck of a polish too....Mel

Man, I've tried knapping that stuff and it is really tough to work. Gonna take heat treatment probably or else it will eat your copper bopper up.....Mel
