I slabbed the unknown green I was talking about..I do know its a California rock (that's about it).. I'm going to slab it the other direction next,to get away from the healed fractures...

Looks a lot like what is called Applegate Jade, fairly common in S.W. Oregon and northern Cal.

If it is jade and you cut it the other way it might crumble unless it has a really tight grain. Might be a good way to ID the thing though. Sure looks like jade. Jim

Mike have you scratch tested it?
Acid tested?
How is the break?
Does not look like marble, but andesite is also a possibility.

Ok,did the scratch test with stainless steel-it just streaked the rock with a black mark, like a pencil.. Wouldn't scratch..

OK so not serpentine or marble or a host of others.
Does agate scratch it? Agate will generally scratch Jade.

No agate does not scratch it either, same as before, left streak across the face, came off with pressure, when wiping it off....

I agree with barcay, typical Franciscan Formation chert just like at Panoche Hills and lots of other sites in the California Coast Ranges....Mel

Are your slabs translucent. Your piece does seem to match clear creek jadeite images seen online.

Scott: Yep it will as it's the same chemically as jasper. Typically very hard stuff too. Our Hunters Valley Ranch in California sat right on top of the Hunters Valley Chert formation, anther green Franciscan chert. Broke a Ditchwitch on the stuff trying too put in a trench for a new water line. Had to hammer through it with a sledge. Took almost forever.....Mel

The break is your savior. You have enough data now to have it narrowed down to two "things".
Thanks Mel. I didn't even know we had chert in Cali. I need to move north.
