I was recently promoted to Ni Dan rank in karate and can now train with kamas. Woohoo! The story goes quickly downhill from there. You can see the cheap plastic sleeves over the blades - Not very effective! Within 30 minutes of having them home, I sliced the cover for our comforter right through the sleeve. Understandably, the wife is not very happy: I was already planning to dull the blades for training purposes, so I have a nice piece of tiger-eye all ready. Once the rough work is done, I'll take successively finer grades of automotive sandpaper to the blades and then wipe them down using the same oil (camellia) I use on my katana. As you can see from the below picture, there is quite a notch in the wood where the tang went in. I'll fill that up with wood glue before sanding the handle - and getting rid of those stupid dog stickers. The wood will be treated with coconut oil. Handles are about 14" and appear to be pine - very light. The blade from tip to back of handle is about 7.5". Cheap set - only $20 for the pair, but they will do nicely for training until I can get a fancy set. I hope to have these finished in a few days - if work doesn't call me in. Check back for updates. Updates are finally in - camera trouble. A little glue to reinforce the tang slots: And the finished kama with reasonably dulled blades and lots of coconut oil on the handles. Nothing fancy, but they'll do to learn with:

Ha! Not the couch, the comforter for the bed.
Tigereye didn't work - too hard and the blade just skipped right off, repeatedly...
Now I'm switching off between marble, septarian nodule, and plywood. Worked well for one blade. Will dull the other tonight...

*LOL* That is precisely why my wife does not allow me to play with my swords in the house. Make sure to keep us up to date on your finger count *L*. Seriously, be careful. I had a buddy in school catch a thrust from a broken saber blade down the sleeve of his jacket. Severely cut him from wrist to elbow. Playing with metal objects can be dangerous.....Mel

Playing with metal objects can be dangerous.....Mel I know all about that, Mel. One of my fellow practitioners was working with an iaito (dull katana) blade and put the thing through the meat of his bicep. Then he did the next worst thing by pulling it out. Blood all over the mat. He had quite a bit of explaining to do at the hospital. I'll be very careful with these kama. Already working with the nunchaku as well - my least favorite weapon by far, and I'm still only working with one pair. Imagine it will be worse when I have a pair in each hand.

Toad, I was powdering one of my katanas one afternoon and resting the point on the outer edge of the sole of my boot. Heard a noise and accidentally dragged the edge of the katana against the side of my boot without noticing I was doing so. Dang blade split the boot wide open down the side, fortunately not hitting my hide. I'm a lot more careful these days *L*.....Mel

Mel, my katana has no edge - want to work with it for a while. I'll get a live blade down the road.
