Picked these up off the side of the road in front of my house. The road is made of Florida limestone. I picked up a couple more interesting pieces of chert and some that has crystallized but rather small pieces. Every time it rains it washes the roads out so new limestone is added then grated which leaves fresh specimens for me to hound. I picked up these two pieces. Im pretty sure they are calcite but as usual, Im not the 1st person you'd come to for advice on identifying rocks an minerals. about 1" long and 1/2"tall size is about pebble size 1/2"

Roger on the calcite. It's found in the limestone quarries. Someday I'll have to post a thread on my Florida calcites - you'll never believe they came from Florida. Then there are the calcite clams from down south at Ruck's Pit near the lake.
Nice finds for just walking out your front door!

Yep. Florida has the calcite, fine calcite, big calcite. Right close to captbob's hood.

Thanks capt. for the confirmation! I looked for mew but didn't come across any. I have a golf ball size chunk laying around somewhere. That would be great to see some more when you get around to it.

I went out for a little walk this evening to see if I could find any more but came home empty handed... well, I still filled my pockets with peach colored chert(I think thats what it is, i'll post some pictures once its all clean) and 2 or 3 pebble sized calcite that are in my rock sink outside. I seems like it is a hit or miss when it comes to finding calcite. I tend to find a new piece every few weeks or so and I just happen to stumble up on them. I think the people in my neighborhood think Im a bit nuts walking barefoot poking around on the side of the road picking through and inspecting rocks. A gentleman walked by with his dog and asked if I was looking for gold, I replied "No, Im looking for Calcite" and the convo ended with that, the funny thing is that's not the first time he's asked me that. One of these days I'll have to give him some tumbled rocks so he sees Im not some crazy guy playing with rocks on the side of the road.

I have been asked if I'm looking for gold so many times ........... LOL I wonder if these people who ask if we're looking for gold are serious. If gold was found in Florida it wouldn't only be a home for the Snowbirds anymore.

And even then I might not stop looking.
