Sad to see such a beautiful animal killed... I have them roaming thru my property all the time. They are gentle peaceful creatures that don't deserve a bullet in my opinion. I suppose you are vegan? Yeast had to die a horrible death for you to have your wine/beer/spirits. [most of what I typed was redacted] Ash, looks like lots of nice sausages. I hope you chopped the hearts real fine, sauteed in butter and red wine with the stems of a dozen mushrooms, onions, garlic, salt and pepper. Once reduced by half; add an equal volume of stale cornbread crumbs, and simmer until well combined, stuff that into the mushroom caps and bake until mushrooms well cooked. Served hot with with a nice bourbon, there are few things 'outdoors' that are better.

I actually have never eaten any of the organs from a deer. Yeah, Louisiana...eat everything(which is true). We will be set up much better next year and I may need to try some of that.
The season is still going, but I am back in Baton Rouge and back to work so probably done for the year. This year was very strange. We had a massive acorn crop so the deer basically did not move. Once December hit, there is great debate as to whether the rut happened or not, I'm sure it did but very few saw any evidence of it, the deer went nocturnal.
I'll post a couple of pics when i get the chance and am on a puter at home.
Thanks to all who checked it out and posted, pro and con. Nothing like chatting about hunting on a rock tumbling forum lol

Sad to see such a beautiful animal killed... I have them roaming thru my property all the time. They are gentle peaceful creatures that don't deserve a bullet in my opinion. I too love to watch deer. As has been stated, the deer need control. I can't speak for others, but we hunt ethically, eating the animals we harvest and trying as best we can to find and process the animals that we harvest. I would say that deer require management and you need two things for that; population control and resources, ie. money. Both of these are provided by hunting. Honestly, there are more deer than ever before. My great grandfather told me once that when he was younger, every once upon a blue moon they would see a deer track. The land could support just as much then as now, but they did not have adequate predation. I don't remember off-hand what the population curve for white-tailed deer is called but it is essentially straight up and down, nothing controlling their numbers, they overpopulate and either mass starve or get wiped out through illness. The current population is kept pretty stable and the methodology for accomplishing this task, hunting, is both simple and elegant. Though I do not agree with your opinion, it is your right to think whatever you want. But, please understand that the hunters are, ironically, the best friends the deer have. Agree or not, it's still the truth. The hunters appreciate those shy beasts enough to put their money where their mouths are. The system works. Don't believe me? Go drive down the Natchez trace right now at about 6PM (dark) and hope and pray you don't hit one...the woods are lousy with them.

Well said, Ash! Population management is a necessity. For the life of me, I can't understand why some folks think that because they don't believe in hunting, they have the right to judge others that do?
Thanks for sharing.

Okay, so I killed a two year old spike, shot it for a big doe. He had small funny looking spikes so was probably okay that he got the hammer dropped on him. It's legal, but we try to let the little bucks walk, but C'est la Vie. The season will go until the end of next month for archery, but I probably won't get back there. That big ten point was grunting and running does everywhere that we were not just before Christmas. My dad says that they don't get big by being stupid, and up there in that area, the deer get hunted pretty hard so he is crafty. We have named him slick. I am already making plans for my attack next year lol. This is one of several bucks that were taken by my crew in another Parish. Another, this one was an old deer that was culled. Big ole deer. I actually saw a young buck, maybe a two year old, that had a rack exactly like this, just not as much mass. That one will probably get culled if his rack stays the same. I did not even scope the joker. That's about it. We have plenty of steak, a few roasts, hamburger and green onion sausage to last for the year...hopefully. Have a great Christmas everyone!

this may be a case of Avatar Personality Disorder Enjoying your avatars, 1dave! Were you using a different avatar earlier today? Hi Jan, Sorry I have run a muck. I've gone through 16 in the past week. Luckily few RTH-ers have been on line to notice my derangement. I'd like to blame jamesp, but it is all my fault. There are so many I like I can't make up my mind. Should I stay with my own personal photos, the rocks (especially Thundereggs) I love, Wally Wood's Mad art I treasure (especially the green guy pushing himself in a wheelbarrow), wild science, . . . The Geode Kid - Robert Paul Colburn - drew diagrams of a spheroid growing, then expanding into a thunderegg that I made into a movie for him. I'll see if it can become an avatar. EDIT: Nope, AVI's not allowed. Here is SuperDuperMan.

I thought that threads were created to derail. Reading all the antics never gets old. I'm afraid slick may be a good bit smarter than me and my crew though lol
