I was inspired to post these by jamesp homemade tumbler thread and his "king kong" agate grinder. We took these videos at two different museums in Idar-Oberstein. @shotgunner - meet the original KING KONG agate grinders complete with saddles haha ...

Very cool. I have pictures of such equipment in some of my rock books, but seeing them in action is super.
Wheel rotation seems kinda slow, but I'm sure the Germans have this figured out, turning science into an art.
Like those worn "saddles" - shows the many decades these machines have been in use.
Thanks for posting these Tommy!

Those guys are laying down on the job. Must redesign to laying down position Tommy. Oh yea, they are drinking too much beer to stand up. They wrote the book on King Kong grinders, what a slab for grinding, the life they must get out of this wheels. And so quiet. Great piece of history Tommy, you are fortunate to see Idar-Oberstein. Thanks for sharing a real King Kong grinder.

Aaack! hahaha I SO wanted to write up a trip report and I'm still thinking about it. Part of the problem is it was an over two week trip with literally a thousand photos haha. It just got overwhelming to even think about it. You've given me a good idea though - isolate and focus on just the I-O side trip.
