Howdy folks, Had some time yesterday so I sawed three more small Rio Grande agates. Here are some pics. Thanks for lookin.....Mel Moss with fortification: Pretty typical bright colored Rio moss agate: My favorite from the lot but just a little one. I wish the pics showed it better but this is really nice plume with some slivery hematite thrown in. The reds in this are much more intense than the camera shows. Closer look:

White coating from sun or exposure to soils, what do you think ? Sometimes the white skinned ones have the richest colored mosses.

Yeah James, I'm with you, the white skinned ones, while there's little indication what's inside without chipping,often seem to have really nice moss. I think the white skin is due to weathering over the eons. Some when chipped show a white cortex that is quite thick just like our local flint nodules. Was talking with the Holloways last week and they told me the ones without the crust are being picked up in stream beds as they have a lot of creeks draining into the Rio on the ranch. The stream action removes the cortex.....Mel
