I picked up a nice size chunk of what looked like a plain brown jasper, common enough for the area I was at just a bit bigger than normal chunk. I finally got around to taking a few slabs off of it and wow, what a cool rock! you'd never know based on the outside of it. Here's a few pics: This is whole rock: and here's a slab and a macro of the slab:

it has a conchoidal fracture like jasper, and it's a 7 for hardness...

it has a conchoidal fracture like jasper, and it's a 7 for hardness... Fine grained granites can have a glassy break. Jasper is a 6-6.5. If you have a true Mohs 7 that is a sign of quartz, in granite. The river tumbled exterior seems to show crystal structure and that is why I said granite. Plus there are countertop granites that look very much like that pieces interior. I have been wrong before, I'll be wrong again and I accept I may be wrong now. I dont have the stone in my hands. Have you polished any yet?

Right now it's sitting on my desk, looking somewhat like a cookie in the corner of my eye. I keep wanting to reach over and take a bite.
