Rules: Nothing has changed, Entries are not required to be started in the time frame of the contest, only finished by the deadline. All entries however will still require a photo of the slab, preform and finished cab. So no cabs pulled from the drawer. Things like intarsias, carvings, jewelry, and composite type cabs can not be entered in an effort to keep the contest somewhat fair by just entering free form style cabs. Again, please remember to include a pic or two of the original slab, then a pic of the preform, and finally, the finished cab. We ask that all entries submitted to this contest be unique to the RTH version of the Killer Cab Contest. I will do my best to monitor the other forums for duplicate entries, and any duplicates will be disqualified. You can enter any shape cab and your choice of mineral. Feel free to share with us what ever you like about the material, the process or what ever else you would like to share. Cabs posted here are only for the contest. I have a small request, because I am not always 100% confident in identifying all materials, if everyone could do their best to remember to ID the material (even if it may seem obvious) it would help me at times, I get concerned I will make a mistake if I guess when I am creating the poll. If you have no idea on the material, that's perfectly OK too I have entered my fair share of mystery materials, there is no shame in saying "not sure what this is", usually we get some ID help through out the contest too which is a bonus. Good Luck everyone! Carleton

A quick note and proposal, I had a msg from someone wondering if we could also add some critiqueing to the entries. So what I was thinking in order to keep it safe, if someone who enters a cabochon would like some constructive critique on their cutting etc.. Please add "Critiquing Welcome". I do not want anyone avoiding the competition for fear of criticism, so lets keep it to the entries who ask Thanks for the suggestion, lets see how it goes! Another note, last moth there was a question regarding a rule, it was answered perfectly so no harm, but please do not ever hesitate to email me, as I don't get on as often as I would like. Carleton

This rock is a local Alaskan tube agate jasper mix from Caribou Creek. It is hard to find them looking like this. I started out with an end cut because only the end cuts seem to have black metallic like stuff included, a little specular hematite as well. This will be the 4th cab I have completed on my machine. Polish is the highest wheel my machine has (3,000 grit) Critiquing welcome I may try my 10k polishing pad on this, If I do I will add another pic.

This is some Chinese Pietersite. It is a slab I purchased from ebay. It is one of the worst cut slabs I have ever seen lol. It looked like it was cut with multiple saws and has grooves and thick saw marks all over it. Looks Like a mix including quartz and jasper mixed in am I right?

A quick google - It is a brecciated tiger's eye and can found in seams of iron and jasper. It is only known to come from two areas. Nambia and Xichuan. If what I read is correct, both mines it is found in are currently closed.
The website I looked at says it is a mix of clorite, crocidolite, calcite, hematite, jasper, and quartz. The crocidolite is asbestos & silica.
It is a very neat material to work with. It is fun watching the play of light change as you work through different layers of the tiger's eye.

Updated my photos... The end polish using tumbler polish on a polishing pad turned out better than my 3,000 grit wheel, highly noticable difference. The cab wanted to undercut a lot so this was my most challenging cab so far. I'll see if I can get better pics because my current pics don't show how nice it really is

When I cut my preforums out I stay very close to the outside of my cab lines when cutting...afterwards I taper the edges with the saw.. Gives the ability to have more cabs per slab and have more scrap to tumble if there is any.... I can throw ya a pic some time if your interested. I think that this helps the process out a lot and saves money on the grinders. This is some Chinese Pietersite. It is a slab I purchased from ebay. It is one of the worst cut slabs I have ever seen lol. It looked like it was cut with multiple saws and has grooves and thick saw marks all over it.

My new years resolution is to submit something to the contest each month to try to push myself to get better at cabbing and taking photos of cabs. This month is a piece of Priday agate I got from Richardson Ranch. It is a large cab with a shallow dome, which was a technical challenge for me. the slab the preform the cab:
