My new saw arrived this week and I finally started slabbing again. I started off with some OJ First slab I faced one end and took 4 slabs, then cut two larger sections off. The color is great, but not many orbs =\ I will half the sections and cut smaller slabs from the opposite direction. I needed to get the width down to 7" so I could turn the stone and start cutting through the red/green/translucent area. I hope it has more orbs in that section. Before setting up the OJ for the other cuts, I slabbed some kaleidoscope jasper, ruby in fuschite, and some seraphinite. The saw cuts well and I am very happy with it

@roger
I'm in the market for a slab saw. What did you get? I've been looking at a 16" Covington. Give some details on what size rocks yours will cut.
Great colors on the OJ. Those slabs look great. Thanks for posting photos.

I went with a Covington 16" with power-feed. I made the purchase on ebay from Jodi Boyd, aka "theagateer". For the record - Jodi is awesome. One of the nicest and most sincere people I have run across in a very long time.
The saw is pretty nice. I like the compact design quite a lot. I had an 18" for a little while and the thing was huge. This saw tucks away in a corner nicely and is compact enough for me to lift it if I need to.
My two "complaints" with at this point are; 1) It is a loud saw. The 18" I had was quiet enough when cutting hard agate to carry on a conversation standing beside it. The Covington, not so much. 2) It does leak some oil mist/vapor. Not a lot, but enough to see it. Otherwise, the saw is perfect for me.
The vice will open to a bit over 7" wide. I think it will cut 6.5"Hx7"Wx18"L.
Saw loaded with OJ
Saw tucked into the corner and my messy cab area..I need to reorganize it again lol
The other half the messy cab area..

Sweet! Been waiting for the saw pictures as well. It's SO clean!! Where is the "messy" cab area? Looks kinda normal to me. Hope you don't need in that breaker box in a hurry sometime. I don't think I would be comfortable having a rock sit that far out from the vise. Hope we can look forward to more slab pictures now

I don't think I would be comfortable having a rock sit that far out from the vise. With raw rough, I wouldn't hang it out like that. I had just faced both sides of that rock so there were smooth sides for the vice to hold onto. I tightened it down well and made sure there was zero movement...then I baby-sat the first slab and double-checked it was all still tight before starting the next.

that's a lot of height for a 16"
what size flange?

Covington is known for undersizing flanges to gain more cutting height. Flange should be minimum 1/6 blade diameter per MK.

I think the flanges exceed the minimum suggestion from MK. I believe they are 3". I would need to check and verify it though.

I think 3" is better for blade stiffness anyway. Still, 8-3 suggests 5" height. All in all a nice range of sizes you can handle. Looks like plenty of space to the right of the vise too.

Sweet.setup. What kind of cabbing unit is that? I've never seen one with 8 wheels. Do they make an 8" unit? Thanks for showing.

Actually a 3" flange will eat up 1-1/2" of the 8" blade height, giving well over a 6" cut height. Roger, that is really awesome all the way around!

Nice shop setup. Your messy is cleaner than my cleaned up. I am curious about the 8 wheel unit too.
