I traded this hunk for some star garnets. Any ideas where it's from? 1. Front lit photo. All the the remaining photos are backlit. 2. 3. 4. 5. I hope somebody recognizes this material so I'll have some idea where it's from. Later, Brent

Thanks jamespI traded it for a 1 inch garnet crystal. It was a nice 12 sided crystal but I can't help but think that I got the better part of the deal. The guy I got it from had a lot of better flourite. I should have brought some better garnets to the trade. That was a learning experience. I rarely bring it out to show people because I know it's fragile. My worst nightmare is seeing somebody drop it on a hard surface. Later Brent

You have access to the garnets, so a great barter material.

Fluorite is common and widespread, so a location ID may be tough. A lot of the fluorite commonly available at shows is from the Yunnan Province of China, but here are many possibilities.
If you have access to a long-wave fluorescent tube (black-light-blue poster lamp) you may find that it fluoresces (glows) in the dark. Worth checking out.
With all your star garnets, you should be able to build yourself an impressive mineral collection without spending a cent. Simply trade. Most dealers would sooner part with inventory than cash if you have something to trade.

That's a beautiful fluorite specimen, Starguy! Nice trade, although I don't think I could've parted with the precious (star garnets). Agree with broseph82's suggestion of having it backlit all the time, maybe with a wooden base and built-in light?

Just a note, some flourite will fade in the sun. That's a great deep purple.
