Some of you may remember that last year my mom decided to try to grow an avocado from one of the pits out of an avocado Jean gave me. It had just started to sprout last spring when I left to go back to Montana. Well here it is a year later and it is still alive and well plus it's bigger. This was last year: It may never get avocados on it but at least she has a nice houseplant. Thanks Jean for the avocados....hoping for more

Wow, Diane, your mom certainly has a green thumb. Now just another ten years or so until it bears fruit! Probably will have to go in the ground before then, lol. Still a great looking plant!

makes me think of my mom, she was forever starting avocados, citrus, and apple seeds, growing pineapple tops, carrot greens, sweet potato vines... anything that she could... always gave them away, but one avocado went until it was too big to get back into the house at the end of its season outside, probably 4 to 5 ft tall as I remember, and lots of branches. Always looked like a jungle in our kitchen. those avocados make nice house plants, but you may have to give it its own bedroom eventually! (thanks for the memories)

Odd how bigger seeds are easier to germinate. That, is a big seed.

Thanks, snowmom. It was delicious! Will be eating lots of avos for the next few months. The avos this year are a little smaller than last year's, probably because of less water (the drought, you know), but every bit as good! Lot's of flavor, buttery texture.
Sorry, didn't mean to tease.. What am I saying? Of course I did, lol!

Go ahead and pinch them off now, then when you plant it in the ground lay it flat into a trench with just the leafy part sticking out and tie it off so it will bend to an upright position. The stem will grow roots and all will be good. I do it with spindly tomato starts and it works every time.

Lee I don't think my mom is going to plant it in the ground too hot and dry here. She says she did pinch off some leaves when it first started growing taller. At least for now it looks good as a houseplant.
