Bill, I appreciate the offer, but I was really just playing along for fun. I had already used my answer that round anyway! Your continued posts of your Quartzsite experience are prize enough. Thanks for the fun game. I'll take Captbob's goodies! Still don't have very much from anything out West.

orrum thank you for this fun game! I learned several interesting things while participating. I think the most important is not to discount my 14 year old son when he shows me a website that explains how the settler glass can change color, to purple, due to the magnesium content when exposed to sunlight and asks me to post his guess. On the bright side, this close to Christmas, maybe he'll forget and I won't have to own up to his being right

orrum, how far is it from the Marine base where you are finding the purple glass? There's Bullion agate on the base. rockhound-field-trips.ning.com/profiles/blogs/usmc-twentynine-palms My brother was based at 29 Palms about 20+ years ago, and sure wish I would've known about the purple glass and agate when we visited him there one Christmas. Way off topic, but since we are discussing purple glass, I wanted to ask fantastic5 if she posted any of the gorgeous JXR amethyst she found when she visited the site?

No gingerkid, I haven't taken the time to photograph any of my JXR material. This time of year is so busy, I barely have time to check this board during my breaks at work A girl has to keep her priorities in line even at work

I don't think anything is legal to remove from 29 palms, rocks included. I believe it is leased from the American Indians, 100 year lease I think, might have to wait awhile. somebody correct me if i'm wrong. nice contest bill.

Hope you'll get some time to post your pics from JXR soon, fantastic5. Hi, marinedad! Thanks for sharing the info with us about the land is leased by the Native Americans. Very interesting, and didn't know that. I purchased a slab of the Bullion plume from Mr. Daryl of Blairrock a couple of years ago; guess it came from an older collection since the site is being bombarded by Marines. I asked my brother (ex-combat engineer) if he remembered the location, which he didn't, but he went to Barstow for training exercises. He mentioned seeing strange formations (drawings?) at the site. ?

In the spirit of paying it forward, I'm doing my own contest and will give away a box of rocks. Look for details in a separate thread.

Great contest Bill. I collected some purple desert glass last year. We were out at Quartzsite and a bunch of us from this board went up to the old Planet Mine area. I didn't know that it was so desirable at the time but my wife liked it so I brought back several pieces. I'll have to give cabbing it a try. Thanks for paying it forward.
