Sweet ~ looks like Christmas candy, jamesp!! Both of the rhyolite tumbles by the penny in your 5th pic have a funky pattern.

Heat treated rhyolite(600-650F) Sawed easy, grinds and shapes easy, tumbles very fast with no frosting, chips smooth w/little effort. Great candidate for spheres @shotgunner, available in big chunks with no cracks. Softer than obsidian(in this batch). No cracks or blow ups from heating. Heat enriches color. Bad side is difficulty in taking a polish. Fun fast tumble. May even taste good. Vitamin R ?

Chuck Never rounded rocks that much in 4 days at coarse grind. Some were pretty jagged chips that saw little touch up. Once it was cooked the fun part began, and that was chipping the stuff about the bands to get desired patterns. It broke so smooth with gentle touch of the hammer, not so much with the unheated stuff. I think it is a common rock out west. If it was heated to just 500F it may be hard enough to take a better polish.

Looks like more experimenting is called for. Great looking batch! I like the ones Jan pointed out - mutants! They are different.

Very nice rocks. Interesting patterns and sweet mellow colors. I like how they are displayed on the tumbler instructions.

Got another batch running, going to pull it and heat soften them too when the 30/60 grit has broken down. instructions ?? who needs those

Those are some cool looking rocks. I've only tumbled a couple that I got in the Big Fun Tumbling Contest. They didn't come out as shiny as yours.

He's showing his thoughts on eccentrics for a homemade downsized vibe tumbler. The casting they used for a counter weight is very raw. I'm not sure precision is required. Some photos Total shaft. eccentrics opposed, no vibration Same, no vibration Slight vibration and heavy vibration settings Maximum vibration setting
