I have made several sets of these and they have been well received. Take a 12" natural stone tile, cut an 8" square for the trivet and cut the rest into 4" coasters. I finish the edges up to 600 on my flat lap for a satin finish, then glue some small cork pieces on the back. Besides keeping it from possibly scratching the surface, the cork raises the piece off the table a tad so it's easy to pick them up. There you go. A few hours work yields a nice gift.

That's a lovely set! I am doing a similar project with serpentine tiles. Start with 12" square, make several smaller coasters, and several longer coasters that hold a cup of coffee and a cookie.

Thanks Pat. I love the long coaster idea. I've been tossing around the idea of making a spoon rest. I'm not really set up for carving, so polishing inside the rest may be a bit difficult.
