I'm trying out a brand new expanding wheel and belt. All looks good until I put pressure on the belt and it immediately kicks out to the left. Any ideas what is causing this? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

How old is the wheel? Is it "brand new" or just new to you? Older wheels lose their "expanding" ability and therefore don't tighten up against the belt to hold it on. The wheel isn't on backwards is it?
ETA: Have you tried a different belt?

The only 2 things I can think of would be wheel on backwards or running too slow RPM, needs full motor speed 1725 RPM. A side view pic of the wheel stopped will answer that. If it's a Rayspan or other Chinese wheel it might just be faulty.

I have that problem with my 2 1/2 inch wide expando usually happens on start up my solution is to wet the belt before I put it on seem to stop it from slipping slomohs grinding
those video of the water driven grinding wheels from Idar are wunderbar! thanks for posting them !

It's literally brand new and the belt too - got home from our trip last night and it was in the mail from Rons Rocks from Ebay. Definitely not on backwards - I was very careful and pulled it off and checked it. Have not tried a different belt - I'll try that this morning thanks.

When the belt drifts consistently to one side its that your machine is not level. Even a mm or so will cause belt to drift (especially at start up and on powerdown). Lower rpms allow the expando to de-expand and loosen the belt. I have one 8" that tends to let the belt drift off center an inch or so, and I have been known to place a piece of duct tape inside just to shim it a bit tighter. Its worth watching tho, because if you run the expando with the belt off (i.e. it slip off while you are working on another wheel), the whole wheel can decide to disintegrate and cause damages to you and your shop. Try the leveling solution, and then also keep something at hand to guide that belt back in place on startup. Don't use your hand or your favorite rock, either one will be damaged by contact with the sharp edge of the spinning belt. Good luck. Tom And maybe its just worth trying another belt in case that one is just stretched a bit.

Tommy, I think there's different sizes for the 8x3 belt? Could it be the size of the belt?

I found the Raytech belts fit a little tighter than the Eastwind, but neither was too loose. The drum expands nicely and the belts get very taunt. No lateral movement at all.
Who made the Expando?

I have had a couple of SC belts from Kingsley that would slip I think they were both course grit. But they were on older drums that were not as soft.

Tommy, I think there's different sizes for the 8x3 belt? Could it be the size of the belt? You and Daniel and Kap are right on the money apparently. The belts I bought from Rons Rocks with the wheel do not work - they slip as shown in the video. I have some other belts that I got at the Rock Shed and they fit snugly and do not slip. Go figure...I thought all the 8x3 drums/belts were supposed to work together but I guess not. Thank you everyone for the input.

Lortone makes an 8x3 drum that takes a slightly larger belt, you probably have some of those belts.

still, if Ron sold both, he should have advised

The Lortone (Scott Murray) expando takes a 25 7/32" cut length belt, the Rayspan and other Chinese expandos take 25 1/8" and don't expand as well. I'm sure if you let Ron know the problem he will make it right.

I'm sure if you let Ron know the problem he will make it right. That's what I was hoping too - calmly politely asking him about it but all he has offered so far is a bunch of finger-pointing nonsense. Belts sold as 25 7/32 are not working on a expanding drum sold as 25 7/32 while running at 1725rpm - that should be pretty much the end of the discussion. Maybe he's just having a bad day. Sad because I like Ron. I've spent over $2400 with him over the past two years...

I hope you didn't buy a lot of them. They will probably work on Scott-Murray drums if you know someone who has them. I have sent a lot of money Rons way too, there's never been a problem so I have never tested his customer service. Kingsley sells for about the same price, less if you want to buy large quantities.
