Fossil Mike sent some T-eggs to me so I could more or less carve them. The whole truth is that I am just removing the matrix so I can polish the agate in it's natural form. So far things have not gone well but I am just getting started on the lower end of the learning curve. I was hoping that I could do most of it with hammer and chisel but I went to far and broke the first one. Got quite a bit removed from two of the eggs. The first one that broke. It had a lot more matrix than what I thought. Holding the agate together. It has one side that is perfectly flat. Two halves. Second one. Chipped the agate in a couple of places before I stopped. The matrix seems to be attached to the agate a little better (bad for me) on this one. Guess I gunna halfta work on my patience just a bit. Next I will try making slices with the rotary then chip pieces off. I would like to try one of the little chisels that attaches to the rotary but they are pretty expensive and will have to come later. Not sure when I will get back to it because that much rotary will require outside work. Jim

Tumble them might be a option Jim.

Interesting concepts on how that rock reacts to a chisel and hammer....The bad part of T/E's,is the agates are all of different sizes, depending on their development, after the explosions and formations of minerals.. Thanks for posting the progress Jim...

I'd grit blast away the matrix on that second one.
I like this experiment. Glad to see capable hands working it.

Tumble them might be a option Jim. I'm currently test tumbling a few of them. I'll let you know how it comes out but it will be awhile as I'm using a rotary.

I do not tumble any more and the matrix on the second egg seems as hard as the agate. Pretty tough to chisel. Jim

Too labor intensive for me but since you're thinking of carving, which is also very labor intensive...? BTW I have a number of them I'd love to get flat lapped if anyone knows someone who can do that...

What I am shooting for is getting down to the agate and polishing the natural shape. Jim

I have published my tumbled thundereggs in the tumbling photo forum now.
Curious to know how your project is coming. I have a thunderegg with a banded red agate center that might look very good if I removed all the matrix so I'm curious how difficult the project is turning out to be.

I have not come back around to that project yet. Kind of hung up on the malachite. Jim
