Mine is in Fernandina, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, all crying about the cold. Last year it hit -2F, killed things that are unkillable. Where's Al Gore anyway?

Haven't seen much of Big Al. I think he's taking classes in remedial logic.

Helicopter mothers hovering over their 18 year olds trying to make sure they're safe and warm! Get a life! This IS New England and in case they don't know it,,,,it DOES get cold here in January! LOL ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I don't know who looks more like a mad man,,,,Al Gore or Jack Nicholson! LOL At least Jack is acting! LOL connrock

connrock - Always liked George Carlin's take on kids. Can't put his video up here due to his language, but he is so correct. Life is tough, you better raise them tough.... Gore /Nicholson comparison spot on and too funny. That is great.

I would think that wind an waves would reap havoc, especially if ice is in the water. Do those lakes fluctuate, I would think the ice melt would raise the level ? If the source of ice is precipitation, then it would be "new" water and add to the lakes' volume. BUT, the lakes are so huge the affect may be negligible. Here is some fun food for thought----- The stones of "Racetrack Playa, Death Valley, CA

So that's how those rocks move. Was aware, seen the mystery discussed. Leave it to ice.

Kids today(and some grown-ups) will go down in history for having the most muscular thumbs since the dawn of man! It's pretty hard to define the word "children" today cuz they don't seem to mature till their in the late 20's unless they join the Military ,,,,,,where mom can't hover. connrock

Gotta gotta toughen up a bit, tis a cruel world out there. Will be some wake up calls Tom.

As to not bump another thread, I'll ask here.
What is the difference between the Rhyolite you've been tumbling and Wonderstone? Same thing?

SiC is not naturally occurring except extremely rarely as moissanite. This is definitely a buyer beware instance.

Moissanite, hmmm, lets find that material and break it up for tumbling. Or sell it, bet it has a market with the specimen guys. I agree w/captbob, the sphere is purdy darn ugly. Wonder what they ground it with !!

Hey Jim, did we ever decide what the Aluminum Oxide Pre-Polish from Lortone is? 1000 or finer? And, the Aluminum Oxide Polish = 14,000 - right? Figure your memory has got to be better than mine and you and save me some searching

Hey Jim, did we ever decide what the Aluminum Oxide Pre-Polish from Lortone is? 1000 or finer? And, the Aluminum Oxide Polish = 14,000 - right? Figure your memory has got to be better than mine and you and save me some searching If I remember right, Lortone AO pre-polish has a spread of 44 micron to quite small. 44 micron is 325, but most of the particles were 35(the median size), which is 500. Lortone said it would be classified as 500, but it is a mix like most tumbling grade AO. The Lortone 5000 he sent me is also a mix from 2000 to 9000, with median particle size at 5000. it has never been marketed. The only 14,000 I have is the well tested and proven Rock Shed AO 14000. Hope that answers your question.

yuppers, sure does. What it does not answer is what the heck am I supposed to to with this pre-polish crap? Sounds like Lortone's tumbling instructions: Just got a new lortone tumbler. Their manual says 60/90 SC, 120/220 SC, AO pre-polish (grit size not specified) and then AO polish. are okay then being the pre-polish is basically a mixture of 325/500. I'd still use something (Triopli or 1000) after the pre-polish, but I'm kinda into overkill. On this obsidian batch I'm running, my recipe is 60/90 - 120/220 - 320 - 500/Tripoli - 1000 - AO polish No where for the "pre-polish" stuff in there. I bought 5 pounds of it when we (you) were searching for the 5,000. Guess I can use it instead of 320/500 somewhere down the line.

I run 60/90 or 80, 240, 600, AO1000 then polish. Vibe batch I'm running now had a good shine out of the 1000.
