author=" Rockoonz" source="/post/787336/thread" timestamp="1420611575"] I know sheltie had problems with his. They fixed it, but it took a while. Lee are you aware of other issues with their product? Come think of it, he was selling out, then not, then nothing for a long time. I hope sheltie is OK. Yep, he has had lots of returns, and I hear if you have a section of floor you need oiled, put a chinese fake highland park there. Too bad, the design is great, but the finished product is slipshod. He designed a nice improvement in the clutch lever with replaceable splitnut insert, then has it made out of crappy leaded quick cut brass instead of bronze. Guess he'll sell lots of inserts that way, a friend with a 24 is ready to scrap it, on his 3rd set in less than a year. [/quote] Cigarboxrocks out of oregon sells replacement feed dogs for the hp saws. Maybe a better choice if he has gone through three sets of the "chinese" hp in a year. I have never bought from them, but just saw them on there website. There under the sub heading "cool parts" Good luck cigarboxrock.com/COOL%20PARTS.htm

The BD guy actually bought a Lortone Panther to test when developing the HP14. He did not like the feed rate or light weight construction. According to him if the blade dulled at all the saw would twist and potentially jam the feed. They made the HP14 VERY heavy duty. Based on the old Star Diamond saw (same vise castings and left hand vise)but elimitated thev pull out sump the old Star Diamond had. It has a removable bolt on sump but every customer I've asked said the saw is just to heavy to lift off to clean. Instead they block up the opposite corner and drain saw and scrape out sludge around the carriage. Saw weighs 230 lbs. crated so saw likely right around 200 lbs.

I think you can get the HP14 from Exolite today, using discount code "Friday" for $1910 shipping included. ($580 discount). This is a good deal.

That's a GREAT deal! Site says 3-4 weeks for delivery. If true, I wonder how they are able to get them faster than anyone else that doesn't have them in stock.

I would be a little worried about a followup email that says oops, not this item. But maybe they have some in stock ...

Best to call and verify availability. BD customer service always says "allow 4-6 weeks" but it really varies. They run into suppliers not able to get components to them (like BD 10 saw castings out of stock for at least 6 weeks right now) that can back up production. They sometimes half slow workloads and will keep their employees busy assembling. A couple of weeks ago they told me they had over 40 BD7 saws boxed and ready to ship. Hard to believe they can sell the HP14 that low if they have it in stock. Their freight to them would leave no profit at that price much less free freight to customer.

Maybe I should another one to look at! With the free shipping, that price is almost $600 less than I paid two days ago. I don't see how they are doing this. ETA: Which would also be $400 less than either johnjsgems or the Rock Shed could do. sumtin' ain't right 2nd ETA: just checked again, shipping = $175 Checkout says: Saw = $2,324.85 "Friday" discount = $581.24 Shipping $175.50 Total = $1,919.21 Figures the biggest thing I've bought since my Tundra truck (not counting a new roof last year) goes on super sale two days after I buy it.

Not unless they either bought up an overstock sometime at a huge discount or stockpiled units back when they were around $1600 on sale (first couple of years out). Or they have units in stock and want to convert them to cash even though they don't make profit or have a small loss.

So why would everyone get the HP14 compared to the Lortone 14 when the Lortone is over $700 cheaper?

It is a quality issue. I like my LS12, but the frame is light. Basically same frame on LS14. I can believe the stories of the frame warping if the blade binds.

Why would anyone drive a Lexus when they could buy a KIA?
Superior quality.

My advice would be to bide your time unless you HAVE to have a saw right away. Saws seem to pop up like weeds. Maybe you could talk with Tony and ask him to keep an eye out for whatever it is you are looking for.
All these folks at Quartzite, someone may be able to find you what you want.
The deal last Friday was the perfect opportunity (wish I had known it was gonna happen!), but saws are always coming on the market - if you can wait.

Yeah I can wait, but it seems like not too many people are into lapidary in my area. I'm willing to travel up to 5hrs one way to get a deal... *sigh guess ill just wait. Please keep posting deals when they occur in the slabs and saw section. Cheers

One of my neighbors is selling a 14 or 16" saw for $500, it does need work. He offered it to me last night but I turned it down,if you want it I can go grab it and ship it to you. You will have to do some work to it. Let me know, those deals disappear pretty fast.

Lortone makes cheap entry level limited lifespan saws. The HP14 will last a lifetime or more, the Lortone probably not. HP has a real vice too.

Jimi what do you need the saw for, meaning what do you intend to do with a saw? While I'm sure the HP14 is a great saw, do you need to spend that kinda money to get the job done?
Again, I'd watch & wait. Shipping alone can be a good chunk of change on something this big and heavy.

Broseph82 There is no brand name on it, I went and looked at it and it needs some work on the feed, he says it does cut, I turned it on and it ran.
The Barranca HP14 is a great saw, if you can afford it I would go that way. If you want to save money for other things this is not a bad deal. I didn't buy it because I am not going to pay $500 for a $500 saw and he wouldn't take $300.

I didnt have the funds before for those older Lortones I let pass for $500, but now I have some funds and am having trouble finding something. I really dont want to spend even the full 2K on a saw to be honest. Id like to get something around $300-$600 even if I have to put a little time and maybe $100-$200 to get it running 100%. Im not a machinist/engineer so I cannot just forge my own parts. Ive never worked on a slab saw so currently I dont even know how it works. I've asked questions and read posts and taken my cabbing machines apart so I know more about them than I did when I first bought them. The rocks or glass ill cut will fit within a 14" mostly. I really dont need a 24" or anything close. Id like to not shell out $200-$300 on shipping either hence why I said Im willing to drive about 5hrs to pick one up. Realistically id like to buy one used, buy a new blade for it with some oil and be able to use it.
