Opal varies in hardness depending on the aluminum oxide content. Yes, opal is not always just silica. The higher the aluminum oxide content the harder the opal is.

Thanks. I was really excited that I won them. There is some really nice stuff in the lot and some flash in a few of the white pieces. Never worked with opal before though so I guess I will start by practicing on the opal I brought back from Lund first. Brought back a lot of different colored common opal from there.
