My Viking vibe gives specific instructions on using rice hulls instead of hard filler for obsidian. Rice hulls are 20% silica(mohs 6 opaline silica). They are heavy because of it and sink in water. They do not break down. Would leave a lot of room that the hard filler would take up if using them. After 4 days :

Is that a polish cycle? Don't see any grit. Are they hard or do they get soft from the water in the barrel?
How do you feel so far about the hulls as filler? Might be a nice replacement for plastic pellets.

Might be a nice replacement for plastic pellets. That is a polish cycle, it is white AO 1 micron. A thin coating so it does not look like milk as in rotary slurry. All I know is that the Viking instructions said to use it with OB. Not in course grind, but AO 320, AO 600 and polish steps. They may not be rotary friendly, like bunching on one end of the barrel. Darn things are tough as a ten cent steak, 4 days in the vibe and they look fresh as the day they got wet. And sink like a rock, making separation a pain. I ordered a 50 pound bale, for $29. Some old school technique, just right for you captbob, I'm only 57.58 in Feb

There ain't but 25 balls of obsidian and a few rhyolites and fluorites. but you made me use filler so I do. Hell, I probably don't have enough OB to fill the whole hopper. Don't have enough nads to fill the whole hopper with OB anyway. The fear of bruises.

sissy
whadda got to lose? How's it gonna bruise if it's full? Fill that baby to the rim! Convinced it's the PVC barrels giving you the bruises, not the rocks themselves.

I just want to get a few under the belt. Plus they are big. Yea, those PVC's flat coarse grind stuff. Always done the hard coral and Rio agates. The coral is incredible, so i built fast rotaries just for it. They tough. The OB is horse of different color. Gotta tone i down. But I bruised those big OB's in a 12 pound rubber Lortone at 12 RPM too. I never had such a butt kicking.

Using rice hulls on obsidian with AO 1000 plus glass filler.
Noticed the hulls wipe the bottom of the hopper. With vibe turned down slow moisture is critical due to washing the polish to the bottom much easier. I think the hulls also get impregnated wit polish.

To me the load looks too dry and doesn't have enough filler. Doing obsidian with fluorite and rhyolite may be like playing with fire? ? I'm used to seeing soap in my Lot-O so maybe that's why this load looks too dry to me,,,,dunno? I wish both of you "kids" would stop calling each other names! LOL connrock

Will you tell him to stop ? Been running a few fluorites with the obsidian, to my surprise it does fine. The rhyolite was heat treated and softer than obsidian. These test fluorites with obsidian and rhyolite:

"captbob started it. Will you tell him to stop ?" ,,,,,,,,,,he started it,,,, did not,,,,, did too,,,, Both of you go in the corner for "Time Out"! If that don't work I'll have to use a taser cuz I'm WAY too old to give both you kids a woopin! LOL I'd be scared to put anything in with OB although,,,,,, I finished a load of agate and jasper in polish and when I was rinsing them before a burnish I found 2 pieces of black obsidian in the load that came out perfect!! LOL I don't know how the heck they got in there but they survived quite well! I tried it again and the OB was a mess so go figure? If I had to guess how and why this happened I would say it was the filler/soap and that none of the agate, jasper or OB actually touched each other? Then again,,,,why didn't it work the next time I tried it??? Might be a good experiment for captbob and Jimmy The Kid to try so they won't be verbally "accosting" each other here! LOL connrock
